I have some British Fair Ground people - do they belong on this project or should there be a separate one?

I dont know the difference?

In the United Kingdom we have travelling Fair grounds with stalls and rides - not a circus which r=tends to be just the big tent? Terry Jackson (Switzer)?

I can vouch for this... we have a lot of 'show' people here in Watlington. There is overlap though. Some of our locals are descendants of Billy Smart - famous circus but they don't do a circus but take their dodgems and other rides around.

Well of course we have "traveling fairs" also and their "modern equivalent" of street fairs every weekend!

"Fair ground people" threw me as a term (so does dodgem). I don't think "circus" is confined to the tent but more to the skills & organization?

So now it's looking like "overlap, but different".

Fairs?

THere's a link I think between these "Show people" and Gypsies, or am I mistaken Private User?

Yes, gypsies are associated with carnivals - both the ethnic group (Rom people) and just a term for "traveling folk."

Carnival is the term used in US, fair grounds refers to fixed location, not people. Looks like a more traditional UK term is traveling fun fair, and interestingly, Wikipedia is "right now" proposing the two articles be merged:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traveling_carnival

When you are asking about "show people" - I'm not sure what you mean. There are different occupations / skills associated with both the (fixed location & traveling) fair -- acrobats, ride operators, cooks, fortune tellers, game of chance MC's, belly dancers ....

Terry Jackson (Switzer) ... "aint necessarily so" comes to mind! Not all gypsies are show people and vice versa - will ponder on it!

Private User needs to look at these posts and clarify what his intentions were.

http://members.shaw.ca/pauline777/TravellersUK.html seems to have the title covered.... Showmen, Circus & Fairground Travellers

I like that!

Private User we need your input here please. Do we include fairground people in this project or would you rather we start a new project for them. If they can be included please could you make an adjustment to the details so that it is clear. If you would rather this project was purely for circus people please let us know so that we can set up a new project.

We will set up a separate project and add link here.

From the front page: "Circus people are people who owned or were employed by a travelling circus, including performers suchs clowns, acrobats, animal trainers, musicians, and other stunt-oriented artists, as well as circus hands, managers, and accountants."

So if you feel you have profiles that don't fall under that list, than yeah, maybe you want to create another project for them.
