It cannot be coincidence John Justice is on Harping Creek and Major Gibson is living on Harping Creek at the same time. Major Gibson is first found in Orange Co., with Thomas and George Gibson -- I have long thought this George is a brother or nephew of Gilbert, Gibby had 3 sons, Edward, Gilbert and George. I believe this George [or his son] is also the one found in records of Lambert Dodson, Believe George is same George in Randolph Co., NC -- Major Gibson went to Randolph Co., NC.. David Gibson, son of Gilbert lived in Randolph Co., NC -- A George Gibson is in Halifax/Pittsylvania Co., as is Major Gibson. John Justice has a son MAJOR Justice.

1759, Sep 20 Land Transfer: Joseph Atkinson to Major Gibson per order of R. D. Shockly. 400 acres beginning on Atkinson's branch running up and down south side of Pigg River. From record book 1737-1770; counties of Halifax, Pittslyvania, Henry, Franklin and Patrick in VA.

759 Sept 20, p. 252 The following entry is Transfered to Jn? Williams by order of R. ADKINS, Witness Wm. ADKINS. Richard ADKINSON 400A Land on the fork of Harping Creek Begg on Waltens Line. Jos. ADKINSON 400A Begg on ADKINSON'S Br Rung up & down the br & on the So side Pigg Rr the above transferred to Maj. Gibson pr order In Rd. Shockly.

" John Justice has a son MAJOR Justice" - is INCORRECT.

*JUSTINIAN [Jr]* Justice (Justus), of the Charles City, VA Justices, had a son Major Justice.

Justinian < Justinian < William Justice of Kittawon. And it has already been clearly and explicitly settled by Y-DNA evidence that the Justices of Mirey Creek *cannot* be scions of the Charles City Justices. (This was Martha's sticking-point: she just *could not* accept it and crayfished all around spewing up irrelevant factoids.)

Major Justice was born in Weyanoke, VA, circa 1724 (this is in the Charles City area), and died July 8 1751 (per the "Justice Bible", location not specified).

Something else you have to watch out for is the frequent use of someone's military/militia rank *as if* it was a first name, versus the use of "Major" in particular *as* a first name (numerous examples over on the Eastern Shore, well-documented both ways).

Orange County was split off to the north and west from Spotsylvania County in 1734. It is pretty far north of the Brunswick (1732)/Lunenburg (1746)/Halifax (1752)/Pittsylvania (1767) area (Charlotte and Mecklenburg Counties were also split off c. 1765 but they don't figure into this). Nice little interactive map showing formation and subdivision of Virginia counties here: https://homepages.rootsweb.com/%7Egeorge/countyformations/virginiaf...

Available evidence indicates that the Gibsons settled in Virginia *long* before the Mirey Creek Justices arrived (probably from Scituate, Massachusetts). It looks as though some Gibsons were already in North Carolina by then. http://historical-melungeons.com/gibsontl.html

I've seen coincidence at work. It can get very messy.

If the Justices have a Melungeon connection, it's probably through the Gibsons.

(Sigh) A very detailed survey of southern Virginia maps has thrown a number of curve balls at this discussion. John and Mary (nee Moore) Justice settled on *Harpin* Creek, not Mirey Creek. They are quite different and do not connect - Harpin Creek flows north to the Pigg River in northwest Pittsylvania County, while Mirey Creek is actually still in Halifax County and flows south to the Dan River west of South Boston. Oops....

So what does that do to the theory that Jarvis Greene was the son of George and Mary (Justice) Green?

This inconsistency persists in the (sketchy) primary documentation also.

"HALIFAX COUNTY PROCESSIONERS RETURNS 1737-1770. 26 JULY 1756, JOHN JUSTICE SENR. 400 ACRES ON THE BRANCHES OF THE MIREY CREEK ADJOINING THE 400 ACRES TRACT THAT HE NOW LIVES ON EXTENDING SOUTHERLY AND JOINS GEORGE GREEN. ALSO 400 ON THE BRANCHES OF JOHN MOORE'S CREEK BEGINNING AT A PINE MARKED I THENCE SOUTHERLY."

(John Moore was almost certainly one of Mary's relatives.)

But by 1758 they are on *Harpin* Creek: HALIFAX COUNTY DEED BOOK I pp 374-376 16 MARCH 1758 JOHN JUSTICE SENIOR, ANTRIM PARISH, HALIFAX COUNTY TO JOHN JUSTICE JUNIOR, ANTRIM PARISH, HALIFAX COUNTY FOR 5 L -200 ACRES BOTH SIDES ECHOL'S FORK PARALLEL TO ROBERT MOORE'S LINE TO SD. ECHOL'S FORK THENCE ALONG A BOUNDS EXPREST IN SC. JOHN JUSTICE'S PATENT NORTH 35 DEGREES WEST SO FAR AS TO INCLUDE SD. 200 ACRES OF LAND."

John Justice Sr's will. made 17 July 1766, refers explicitly to properties on Harpin Creek and Pigg River. (Daughter Mary, wife of George Green - explicitly so stated - was to receive five shillings and no land.)

Information regarding George Green is negligible.

The George Green you mention bought land of Israel Brown -- the were neighbors along with Robert GOODMAN. (This Goodman line is also a GIBSON Line, NPE )

Edward Gibson, son of Gibby Gibson left his tools to ISRAEL BROWN in his will. Edward's wife was Ann -- Israel Brown's wife was Ann -- can't be sure but I believe Israel Brown married Edward's widow.

It’s been some time since I have talked with you about Jarvis Green and his father George. I now have proof that Jarvis Green was Thomas Green’s father. I have several DNA matches, through Ancestry ThruLines, to the descendants of Jarvis Green and Sarah Griggs. I did further tracking of George and found that he apparently moved to Tryon County around 1768, Thalia g all of his children with him. Jarvis would have been 17 years old. I am now sure that the property sales by Gerves Green of Tryon Co, NC was George Gerves Green (as he is referred to in older deeds). I believe that Mary probably died not long after her father did and George no longer had a reason to stay. I believe that a 19 year old Jarvis “knocked up” his girlfriend and she may have died in child birth. It is likely that Simeon Justice and Elizabeth Turley Justice took the baby boy and raised him until Simeon died in 1783. Jarvis had been killed the year before. Elizabeth’s brother, Thomas just happened to live down the street from Jesse Keesee who lived on Harper Creek. Thomas Turley raised Elizabeth Turley Justice’s two youngest sons as well and that is documented. When Thomas Turley died around 1796, the two young men chose William Justice as their guardian.
I am not sure if Mary Justice was Jarvis’s morther or not since I cannot place John Justice anywhere near Flatt Rock Creek in Lunenburg where George lived when Jarvis was born. George likely married Mary Justice when he moved to Halifax County around 1756.
