Hello,

i´v found the familyname Chowijes in Mikulov.
The name appears in the "Mikulov-Index 1913".
http://collections.jewishmuseum.cz/index.php/Search/Index?search=mi...

According to that index, this name vanished during the 1st half of the 19th century.

My questions are:

.) I dont speak czech... so i dont know how Chowijes sounds like if it is spoken... is it imaginable that the written name Chowijes turns into Gewitsch in 1780 (Jewish were obtained to take "German-Names") because it sounds equal or at least similar?

.) How sounds the czech city-name Jevíčko... Gewitsch?

The reason for my question is... i cant find "my" Fohsler/Föhsler/Fessler in Mikulov before 1780.

My GGGGGrandfather Israel Hirsch FESSLER is buried at
http://www.chewra.com/keshetnew/kweb/tomb_detail.aspx?tomb=23536&am...
VII_5_41a

on the other hand an Israel Hirsch CHOWIJES is buried at the SAME grave
http://www.jewishgen.org
VII_5_41a
next to him his (their ;-)) wife Rosa/Rochl
http://www.geni.com/photo/view/6000000024298626444?album_type=photo...

In the grave next to him Isak Wolf CHOWIJES is buried
VII_5_41b
he was Israel Hirsch FESSLERS Father.

in addition to that info, i found some more evidencies about a connection Chowijes/Gewitsch/Fessler.

Is it possible that a Mr. Chowijes decided not to take the name Gewitsch (obviously some others did) but take Fohsler/Föhsler/Fessler?

Any hints are appreciated.

Peter Fessler
