According to Peter Muhlenberg "Book of Accounts" Charles was paid by the Continental Army For Distilling Brandy. At the time of the revolution, he was probably too old to serve, but he did his service. My question to the forum is: Would this truly be Brandy, or was it Apple Jack? I understand from other sources the Hottel family had lots of Apple trees, I don't see anything about vineyards.
It was brandy, distilled from apples, peaches, and/or apricots. There are still a few apple trees left in the central Michigan area that originally came from Virginia thanks to his descendants. If it wasn't so expensive, it would be fun to genetically trace them all! For further reading of apple brandy use, please refer to any of the colonial Williamsburg books, like Bullock's Art of Cookery, or for more fun reading, a history of the "Order of the Golden Horseshoe" . Enjoy!
