Yes, but that doesn't make it any less shameful or wrong. And we can still hope that someday, slavery will be truly abolished, World- wide.
There is unfortunately, also, a dark history of slavery of Black Africans, Black Latins as well as, the Indiginous Folk of Puerto Rico. [The ones who were not originally murdered/slaughtered or died off of diseases brought by those colonizing here. (The number 1 killer of Indiginous Persons in P.R. was disease, but sadly, slaughter, was number 2.]

Regarding diseases, there might have been outbreaks before the colonizers arrived, and just to make it justly, animal like seals e.g.
have brought diseases as well. This is not an excuse for all the bad
things the white men did, but, right should be right and sometimes
I get the feeling of that some people out there really believe that the
white with intention brought the diseases JUST to kill off natives.

The record otherwise, are probably the Arabic slave trade in Africa,
1500 year nonstop including, massacres, rape, looting, and
trafficking in women, thereby reducing the peoples own abilities to
stand on their own feet, holding them back in development etcetera.

Sure, I understand, just as in North America with those Indiginous people's, the first Colonial settlers, did not intend to infect them, with their strange, new sicknesses. (Not like the germ warfare of our modern day and age... 😔 Unfortunately we seem to be regressing, instead of improving.)

RE: Ben Affleck...

I just remembered a far more interesting story on a similar show show last year..."Who Do You Think You Are?"
Chelsea Handler, the crazed comedian, is Jewish on her father's side & German Mormon on her mother's side...She was Raised & is very Jewish.

Chelsea went on "Who Do You Think You Are?" to find out about her maternal grandparents.

"Handler grew up knowing her maternal grandparents, Karl and Elizabeth Stoecker, who also came to the U.S. from Germany. Karl Stoecker was a big, strong man who served in World War II as a soldier. He was captured as a prisoner of war and sent to Montana in the U.S. for several years. When he was repatriated back to Germany, he decided he wanted to return to the U.S. to live. Elizabeth Stoecker had talked of her life during the war years, but Karl did not discuss the war.
The family has had a running joke that they come from a line of Nazis."

After Chelsea on the TV Show went to a number of sources in Germany & France it turned out that Gramps had been a Nazi Soldier & possibly a member of the SA...but claimed not to have been a member of the Nazi Party...he was captured in France and sent to the U.S. Some of the actual records were a little fuzzy but Chelsea was relieved that her "loving German Grandpa" seemed not to have actually been a Nazi monster...just a "common " Nazi foot soldier???...or was he?
Did she ever check under his arm for a tattoo???

My point here Chelsea Handler found out her Grandfather was a Nazi Soldier and maybe worse but she didn't think to keep it off of the TV...

I understand Ben Affleck, though. It was the hardest day in researching family history, for all of us, to see the census schedule with an ancestor's name as a slave owner. Then I consoled myself with "OK, one to help on the farm.". Until I found the plantation owner ancestor ....

But what I really can't take are the Tories. ;)

FROM JUNE 25th L.A. TIMES:

The host of the PBS show "Finding Your Roots" has apologized after a PBS review faulted him for his handling of a show about Ben Affleck.

Ben Affleck says he regrets asking PBS host to ignore slave-owning ancestor
The review found that Emmy-winning Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., who hosts the program that examines the family trees of celebrities, inappropriately bowed to pressure from Affleck that one of his slave-owning ancestors be excised from the show.

Gates and his fellow producers "violated PBS standards by failing to shield the creative and editorial process from improper influence, and by failing to inform PBS or WNET [the PBS member station where the program originates] of Mr. Affleck's efforts to affect program content," a summary of the review provided to the media on Wednesday stated.

As a result, PBS said it would delay the upcoming third season of "Finding Your Roots" until it was satisfied the program would not make the same mistake again. The network is also requiring the producers to hire an independent genealogist to verify the facts put forth on the program.

Gates immediately issued an apology in the wake of the summary's release.

"I want to thank PBS for its thoughtful internal review," the former MacArthur "genius grant" winner wrote in a statement. "I sincerely regret not discussing my editing rationale with our partners at PBS and WNET and I apologize for putting PBS and its member stations in the position of having to defend the integrity of their programming."

"Finding Your Roots" became embroiled in controversy earlier this year when hacked emails surfaced on WikiLeaks in which Gates lamented to a top Sony boss that Affleck was pushing for the PBS show to delete mention of the slave owner in his family tree. The episode, which aired last year, did not discuss the relative and focused on other members of Affleck's family.

Affleck apologized in April for his role in the situation, saying, "I was embarrassed. The very thought [of such an ancestor] left a bad taste in my mouth."

What do you think of the PBS review and the controversy over "Finding Your Roots"? Did the network do the right thing?

Truth hurts. So we'll just hide, destroy it, rewrite it, pretend... whatever it takes, right? I have obama hitler and more then 2 dozen others including some torries Erica Howton and a dozen ax murders charles manson lizze borden etc etc but you don't see me hiding changing rewriting things because of it..

As much as i get miffed that this place has inaccurcies i don't rewrite and mess with others data I try to remind them of accuracy first but it seems lost on many people.. His credibility here is the main issue now sadly...
