:-) The Curators are presently having a discussion on the multilingual feature ; and I'm trying to demonstrate the important difference between transliteration and translation (Sharon is Hebrew and translates to Fertile plain (unfortunately :-)). John Sparkman has promised to rename himself "Barren Desert Over the Hill" in support - but I told him it has to be a genuine translation so John - also originally Hebrew - would have to be "YAHWEH is gracious"
He asked if he could use " Yahwel No Fine" as a more South African flavour? :-)
Hi Drummond (and Hilda),
Noted that MC Botha was born in the Heidelberg area 1875. (This, at the time, could be anything south of Pretoria and east of Potchefstroom!? - as Johannesburg was only to be established much later...)
'My' Bothas and Venters hail from the same time and same area and also had a number of Botha/Venter marriages - they lived on farms near Greylingstad - east of Heidelberg towards Standerton. Here are the links to my two relevant families (I try to link to one generation before 1875):
Botha: Johannes Jurie Botha, b4c10d10e3f3
Venter: Pieter Johannes Lodewyk Venter
Unfortunately I could not establish any direct link. MC weren't names common in our branch.
A Geni search revealed two other interesting candidates that you may want to examine more closely:
Marthinus Christoffel Botha, g2h5
Marthinus Christoffel Botha
Good luck - I'll keep you posted if I stumble on something useful.
Regards,
Johann
Marthinus Christoffel Botha, born 25 10 1875, death 28 11 1944 in Springs was my great-grandfather. My grandmother, Gertruida Adriaana Botha was one of 11 children. She married my grandfather Phillipus Cornelius Snyman who was one of 4 children. Phillipus Cornelius Snyman's father was also Phillipus Cornelius Snyman who originally moved with his family from Molteno in the Eastern Cape. His mother was Susanna Elizabeth Johanna Stapelberg, also from the Eastern Cape originally. My grandfather (Phillipus Cornelius Snyman) was born in 1904 in Potchefstroom in the Mooi River British army camp (which housed families after coming out of the concentration camps). I struggle to follow my Snyman family lineage further up from there.....
