1938- 1940

Gerhard Wilhelmus Hospel was at an age of 40 years

The War had started, the Jews were evacuated to safety

Kleve, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

WW II started in Germany in 1939. The eradication of Jewish people had been going on prior to the start of the war. The Jews in the small city of Kleve had been fleeing the city and Germany at a rapid pace. It was a dangerous undertaking because the Nazis wanted to eradicate them rather than let them escape.
The citizens in Kleve were well aware of all the dangerous outcome if they were caught helping the Jews escape.
Anton Elshoff and Gerhard Hospel were friends from a long time ago, first in Germany then in the USA, and later back in Germany. Gerhard's farm was very close to the Dutch border and there was no rigid fence to go into Holland. So it was feasible to move people during the night into Holland. Anton and Gerhard knew that. They also trusted each other. So Anton had some contacts with the Jewish people in Kleve and during a discussion the proposal was made to smuggle the group across the border into Holland. It was a very clandestine plan to coordinate this and put the plan into action. Anton was a German, Gerhard was a Dutch citizen, he also spoke Dutch and the two worked it out in detail and with the best methods (hauling loads of hay and hiding people under it or some variation) that they had at hand. The details were never talked about with others. Not even I, at that time about 6 years old, knew about it. It was told to me by relatives of Anton Elshoff, during the a visit to Kleve, Germany.
The smuggling was so successful at the time that many other requests were made to do this again and again. It is not known how often the border was crossed to get the Jewish families into Holland. The Jews would move into Holland and hide or find ways to get into England.
The border became more patrolled and the operation became dangerous.
Since Gerhard was a Dutch Citizen, living in Germany, he was subject to severe penalties if caught. He asked Anton not to send anymore Jewish families because of the severe danger of getting caught in this smuggling operation. The borders were also patrolled more and the danger was too much. Life went on for both men and nobody ever talked or whispered about it. Only about 50 plus years later did the story come to my ears when visiting Anton Elshoff's daughter, Maria Elshoff. She told me and my wife, Barbara Brunhart-Hospel the moving of Jewish families across the German-Dutch border.

Thank you for that very insightful information Johannes Gerhard Hospel.

Would you like us to include Gerhard Wilhelmus Hospel in this project? I would be more than happy to do so :))

My father would be modest and say, "Don' rock the boat" always concerned that someone would get after him and make life miserable. Well he is dead and no government is coming after him. He has ben dead for almost 40 years and I am willing to let people know what the man did in his own ways to help people.
Thank you for considering the story.

Johannes Gerhard Hospel Thank you for sharing the incredible story of trust and immense courage of your dear father and his friend.

Perhaps you would consider submitting the story to Yad Vashem's database honoring the Righteous Among the Nations?

The moving of Jews across the border to Holland by night saved at least one of my own relatives. I was never told the names of those who helped (their names may have been kept secret to protect them) and of course there may have been others along the border who did this, but i am grateful that you shared this story and, on behalf of my family, i extend grateful thanks to your family!

@Dear Catherine Anna, Your kind words are to go to my father. When I heard the story from Maria Elshoff, about four years ago I have told it to his grandchildren and also to my three brothers. They were all awed what Gerhard Hospel, my father did. My daughter Holly Hospel Lupine, on Facebook placed the article there. It received nice recognition and all were happy. Now I see that *Wendi*, a curator on this program collects this kind of information, so I submitted it to her and more are interested. The reply you gave is so rewarding, because there is now some credence to the clandestine smuggling that took place at the border during that time. Yep, at the age of 6 I heard nothing of this at all. And my ears were always 'to the ground' to hear what the adults were saying.
Thank you for your Reply

Johannes Gerhard Hospel It would be my honor to add your father to the project and we can add him to the project in Dutch also.

It is so, so important to recognize the courage people had and as we have seen in this very thread made the difference between life continuing and not.

Johannes Gerhard Hospel - I hope it is ok with you, I made your father's profile into a Master Profile. If you do not wish this to be done, I can remove it.

Thank you for sharing your father's story and acts of courage with us.

@Wendi. Glad to share my fathers good deeds and I will make sure Anton Elshoff's children will also find out about it. They still live in Kleve, Germany, yet.

It is so much more than just good deeds Johannes Gerhard Hospel. It is true strength of character, compassion for others, and a reverence for human life and dignity.

I just saw Woman in Gold this afternoon. It just reminds me all the more of how important it all is.
