Randy Schoenberg @Pam Karp @Seth Morgulas re: "During the eighteenth century it was the principal Austrian center for Hebrew publications. Since the removal of censorship in 1848 the printing of Jewish works has greatly increased."
I have a question regarding the role of the "Zensor". In Lviv. Were they Christian or Jewish?
I have found this link http://jgaliciabukovina.net/132559/card/bericht-der-zensoren-peter-...
where mention is made regarding the work of Zvi Hirsch Chajes (Hebrew: צבי הירש חיות - November 20, 1805 - October 12, 1855; also Chayes or Hayot) , one of the foremost Galician talmudic scholars.
The Zensors are named as Peter Tarler and Jacow Neuman Enth
Would these Zensors be state employed Jewish or Christian men?

Unfortunately, I do not know the answer to this question. Governments routinely employed censors throughout Europe and certainly their would have been Christian censors in Galicia, however, there are also countless examples of Jewish communities censoring publications.
