If Jane Byrd Claypool was really born in Rockingham County, VA (formerly Augusta County), nearly 200 miles west of Surry County, she may be a relative of the Rockingham County Byrds instead, who appear to be descendants of Andrew Byrd of Oyster Bay, Long Island, a New Netherland settler.

There is no Jane in the will of John Byrd (although there is a reference to an unborn child).

See here for more on the Rockingham Co., VA Byrds:

Good luck and happy hunting!

Hey Ian!

I'm not a direct descendant of Jane Byrd Claypool, but I am a direct descendant of John Byrd and Rebekah Sutton Peterson, her alleged parents. I was curious about Jane (wondering if she was the unborn child mentioned in John Byrd's will) and went looking for more information. Always like to look at the siblings as well as the folks in my direct line--you can miss a lot of good information if you ignore the siblings.

However, I now suspect Jane ended up attached to this Surry County Byrd family in error. Rockingham County is a long way from Surry County. The good news is there was another Byrd family in Augusta/Rockingham County, and those might be Jane's Byrds. I'm passing the information along, hoping it will be a good lead for her descendants! The yDNA information is exciting stuff. It doesn't replace paper trail research, but it can help to sort it out.

We may not be cousins in this line, but that Bonner line is pretty cool!
