Despite rumours being spread, the GENi Conventions are not different to any 'South African Genealogical Standard'. If such a standard existed they would surely recommend that you use the fields as they are labelled in the software you are using, as well as recommending that you follow the published Conventions, so that you work "for the good of all" in that particular online environment. Creating 'work-arounds' that suit private interests would not be encouraged.

"I also want to reiterate that a project of this scale cannot possibly ask all users to conform to the same naming standards; Erica's personal experience and the Dutch conventions being one case, and the in-fighting among South Africans being another. The amount of time and energy that has been expended bickering about this far outweighs the effort it takes to just cope with the differences and continue your good work," Mike Stangel, 3/3/2015.

Francois Mike made a point about attempting to have ALL users conform, and although I hate to admit it, he is correct, there will always be mavericks who refuse to conform... (I won't use that other word that got me into trouble last time). The Dutch have a very strong buy-in and acceptance of their particular Conventions by the way..

My point I am making here is that there has been rumours circulating that these particular GENi Conventions do not conform to the 'South African Genealogical Standard' and I am attempting to debunk that particular myth... as it is sometimes cited as a reason not to conform to our Conventions.

Private User "maverick" - a person pursuing rebellious, even potentially disruptive, policies or ideas.

May get you in trouble again! Ha-ha.

Oops! hope not... ;-)

According to the Cowboy books I have read. a' Maverick' is an ox that is wild and roaming. Not to bad for some of us. I wish I can shout " Back in the saddle a gain " and chase over the prairie.

Donavan, You are pleading with us in such a nice way that I am going to do the right thing from now on. Although there some law that states 'Common practice becomes law'

I am with you.

Haha Dries. I like your sense of humour... and thanks very much for the support!

Surely if we all followed the conventions there would be less "fixing" up and less bickering!?

I have deleted all the 'troll' posts, sorry guys.. they weren't helpful.

Thanks, I am still on.

Private User, I agree.

I'm with your guys on this one... not helpful.
