We're delighted to announce that we now support adoptive and foster relationships! Read more at http://www.geni.com/blog/new-on-geni-adoption-387942.html

Mike Stangel,

Thanks for the addition of Adoptive and Foster relationships.

Why am I currently getting a merge issue in regards to an adoption that was only done by the adoptive father and not the mother. This was the mother's second marriage and the father's first and only marriage.

Kevin,

Later we may layer on support for adoption by one parent, but for now you have to choose the child of a marriage / union as Biological, Adoptive or Foster. If a child has 2 or more Biological sets of parents, you'll see a tree conflict. The fullest way to represent this would be to list the child under both biological parents, and then under the remarriage as adoptive (even though the mother is the same).

Mike Stangel,

Can you please go ahead and log it as an enhancement request to allow adoption to work with one biological parent.

Can you go and have a look at the parents of Sheryl Francine Simon (Gorber) for me to make sure that I have it correctly done. She was not yet 16 when Harry adopted her and her older brother Daryl Stephen Fridlander was able to refuse it as he was 16 when the adoption took place.

You did that correctly, but I see a couple things we need to clean up on Sheryl's profile. I'll post back once those fixes are released.

3/9/2015 at 12:15 PM

Kevin, I released the fixes to suppress the "adoptive" adjective in the immediate family on the profile page (both next to the photo, and the Immediate Family module on the Overview tab) when one of the parents appears in both.

Mike Stangel,

Never would have found them so fast if it wasn't for me doing what I did and asking you to have a look at it.

That is much better.

Now's not a good time to be sarcastic - it's ruining my ebullient mood. :-)

Mike, I've applied it to some adopted profiles in my tree and the feature works wonderfully. Very simple. The information is displayed clearly. Wow! You and your team have implemented something that is very complex in a very simple and effective way. Fantastic work. Bravo! and thanks. -- mario

Thanks for your kind words, mario! We've got a few things to fix but it's nice to hear that what we've done so far, is working well!

it wouldn't be any fun if i didn't give my 16th cousin 2x removed a hard time.. LOl.. anyway will try this out and report back...

Mike Stangel It worked fine for my wife's niece. Thanks!
I had one the other day where the birth mother's second husband adopted the child so I will be looking for that enhancement

The announcement should be pinned to the top of the news feed. I missed it completely until I saw a notice for Facebook so I knew to search earlier on the news feed.

Mike

Via iPad "add family" I added one parent & then went to add the other, but it created an unknown parent. Now there's an unresolved parent conflict.

I don't know a workaround to this without tree view (in tree view I'd just move)

3/9/2015 at 3:26 PM

Addition: of course I know the workaround: add spouse, then move the son over to the parent pair. But I had until today been able to create a pair without an unknown parent arriving ....

3/9/2015 at 3:44 PM

Erica when you created one parent, did you have a box for the other that says, "Add this person" ? If not, you may be using the "center single parents" option that I now see is only configurable from the flash tree! I'll work on fixing that....

Erica Howton good idea testing from ipad..

3/9/2015 at 4:27 PM

Thanks Mike, let me know when fixed. In the flash tree (which of course can't be used from iPad) I do not have center single parent checked.

3/9/2015 at 4:28 PM

As a reminder - in the add nodes GUI on iPad, all profiles are added one at a time.

Erica Howton Have you tried Puffin for your ipad?

3/9/2015 at 5:45 PM

Can't get it installed properly. Chrome works pretty well but gets funky rendering letters & URLs. Also used to use Opera for uploading images until the latest release of the photo uploader; now I upload images on iPhone via Safari (very speedy).

i got somting to let know about adopted children
sure evry one can think about an automatism to be illegetimate children but few of them can be legetimized * legal* Son Of......

it mean in defenition that biological parents are OFF of the line.

i hope with time geni and user can add a better defenition of each profile

good point martin

3/9/2015 at 7:41 PM

Martin I handle that scenario in Geni by using the "partner" relationship. I think that's what it's for: children born out of wedlock.

Mike Stangel works ok on my ipad with os. 5.1.1

3/10/2015 at 1:12 AM

@martin the concept of "illegal" is a religious one - the Geni concept is "child of partners".

On the biological line, the biological parents are always "on" the line - that's the line via which genes are inherited.

Now that we have relationship types of "married" and "partner", and "biological", "adopted" and "foster", there are 6 different combinations possible. I guess we'll use them all when needed; having longer text descriptions of them would be good, evnetually, but not critical.

I'm *so* happy to have this functionality installed!

3/10/2015 at 1:58 AM

Thänks "adoption" - this is great improvmenet.

One short step - suggestion

https://www.dropbox.com/s/3ogurjkgr5spbdb/Screenshot%202015-03-10%2...

I'd like to have different vertical line between adoptive parents. Like horisontal line between mariage and semi-mariage (dashed or greyed)

+1 Harald Tveit Alvestrand as I'm my self an "adoptive" child .. but in a special maner: my biological father didn't abandon me .. and he is still alive ..
I've been adopted at the age of 21 by my mother 2d husband, with my consent .. and my father consent .. (I don't know how "adoption simple" is in English and how the juridical procedures are outside of France)
In fact, I do have two living fathers ... and I'm happy with that ! Love is not biological ..

Thank to Geni, I can now have a view of my real situation and "geni-around" with it ..

Samuel Austin in my book you are a chosen (ici au canada francais .choisis) it goes with legetimated as your parents made a choice for you to be part of the Family :)

i got dificulty with adoptee naming .here it referre to animal we adopt animal we chose our children to be part of the Family.

it just a little diference of interpretation of wording

but you are legal son :)

and its so true

Love is not biological ..... thank you :)

Samuel Austin - Le Maux,

It looks much better after I had to ask Mike Stangel to take a look and see if I have done it correctly. He said that I did and found a mistake in which you have an adoption by only one adoptive parent.

Thanks Mike Stangel for this release.
I have forwarded the link to read up on it to my close correspondents and there is much enthusiasm.

Incidentally the banner across the tip when capturing a Father has a spelling mistake.

"Add far of Sheila Brakenridge"

It should read "Add father of Sheila Brakenridge "

Nice work and thanks to all.
