My tree has been linked to someone else's tree and there are discrepancies between people and dates on hers and on mine. From my research, I don't think that our ancestors are necessarily the same, and because they are quite distant from me, I'd like to remove them from my tree until I can verify them. I don't want to do any damage to someone else's tree so if I delete them, will they still appear on her tree? I don't like having someone else managing my ancestors! I have turned social sharing off hoping that will stop the problem but I still need to get rid of the incorrect people!
Jacky

Jacky, Geni is all about collaborative Genealogy. Once you've merged in with another tree it is now a single tree. In fact, you are now connected to the World Tree with nearly 90 million profiles connected. The reality is that after a few generations your ancestors have produced hundreds or thousands of living descendants. Those people may be on Geni and want to work together on a single vision of the shared tree.

Deleting any profiles removes the profile for everyone. If there are invalid profiles the relation link should be simply disconnected from the valid profiles. I would do this after working with the other profile managers to make sure everyone is in agreement as to the action to take.

Just a quick follow-up,

If this is the profile that is in question:
James Norman ll

You have another option. Since the merge was recent, you can request a curator perform an unmerge of the profile. You'll need to inform them as to which set of parents go to which copy of James Norman II.

Hi Scott
Thanks for the follow-up. How do I go about asking a curator to disconnect James Norman from the link that was made yesterday. I'm not at all sure that the trees are correctly linked from the American side. The research I have shows James Norman (1718 to 1755) to be the son of James Norman (1678 to 1725) and Elizabeth Norman (b. 1684).
Thanks
Jacky

Unknown Profile was unmerged from
James Norman ll

I think there's an old merge that cannot be undone. This needs some genealogy clarification

Tree tops with Alfred Moorman

Note in profile: "It seems like Moorman got changed to Norman along the way some how or another."

Then In his son James Norman l (1678-1725):

It looks like James Moorman's name was changed to Norman along the line so way or another.

--------------------

This information is from Esther D "Peggy" Jackson, Camp Verde AZ which received the information from Alfred Clay, Webster Springs, WV, 1989. He received it from a Don Norma.

======

Is your James Norman l a tree top or do you know his parents? The children are British side, so the fix would be to recreate James (Moorman) Norman as a sibling, and then disconnect your guy from this Moorman / Norman family.

Thanks for doing that Erica. There's definitely a problem with the American link - I don't think they're part of my family at all.
My ancestors go from my grandfather: Bertram Richard (1873-1927) - Ebenezer (1835-1923) - James (1808-) - John (1745 - ) - James (1716 - 1755) - James (1678). In my tree James (1716-1755) has been married to Mary Knight (1719-) but I think he was married to Martha Robertson.Their children were: John (1802) - Jane (1804) Johanna (1810) - Julia (1812) Jemima (1818) and my great great grandfather, James (1808).
According to the American researcher though, they had another son John (1747) married to Lydia Brown (1753) and their children were John II (1777) Timothy (1781) John3 (1798) Timothy (1799) and James IV (1776). I'm pretty sure these are not part of my family and I'm also sure that they wouldn't have duplicated names like this. Can you help or am I stuck with it

Looking at those dates again I think I've lost the plot completely! It's getting too late to do this now so I'll do some checking tomorrow when i get home from work.

Of course I can help, this actually will be an easy separation.

What we need are the parents (if known) of your James Norman l (1678-1725). I suspect he's as far back as you've found out so far, just need that confirmation to separate him from Alfred Moorman

It looks like Alfred Moorman spawned the line that went to America.

Hi Erica, I've got a couple of options for James Norman's parents, but I'll need to do some checking before being sure. I'll get back to you once I have the information.

No worries - I've disconnected James Norman l (your line) from Alfred Moorman (line that went to America)

Hopefully you'll have parents for your James and can now fill them in with new profiles. If they prove to be the same Alfred Moorman, we can re merge.

Thanks for doing that Erica. I'll do some research and hopefully find his parents.
