Project title is:
Anglo Boere Oorlog/Boer War (1899-1902) - Boers
However, much of the information pertains to English forces.
I understand that the page content may have changed since its inception. Such things considered, can some of the content curators or layout specialist look at updating the layout and project title to reflect this?
A clearer distinction between Boer and British forces especially.
My thoughts - could we NOT have the "all races etc". in the title - perhaps just Anglo Boere Oorlog/Anglo Boere War - and mention in the opening paragraph that the project's aims are to provide information about the conflict, and draw attention to the projects where profiles are being linked - To my mind this project probably shouldn't be listing people other than the notables, Generals, Commanders etc. - the men listed would be best added to the relevant project page -
Anglo Boer War (1899-1902) - British Armed Forces
Anglo Boer War (1899-1902) - Notable British Armed Forces
Anglo Boere Oorlog/Boer War (1899-1902) - "Foot Soldiers" - http://www.geni.com/projects/The-Anglo-Boer-War-1899-1902-Foot-Sold... which should probably be re-named "Boers"
The opening paragraph of the Foot Soldiers project states -
<This project is an extension of the The Anglo Boer War (1899-1902). The focus of the main project is to feature the prominent figures of the war. This project is a place where we can add information about foot soldiers who fought in the Anglo-Boer War, somewhere to assemble profiles of these men who are on Geni and to share interesting tales and anecdotes about them.>
I suggest that we re-name it Anglo Boere Oorlog/Anglo Boer War (1899-1902) - Boers because we have 2 projects for the British Forces in place.
I suggest that the Main project be kept simply as Anglo Boere Oorlog/Anglo Boer War (1899-1902) - with only top ranking significant players listed in the text. There is scope in that project to link to more historic summaries of the war - there are so many linked projects perhaps they need to be summarised and linked to in the body of the project. If this is something someone would like to take on please ay so. I am too heavily involved in a couple of other projects (WW1 and the more urgent Lusitania) to do that.
I will go through the added profiles in the text and move them to where they need to be - individuals have not been written up in all the projects - this is something that is nigh impossible considering the numbers - linking them to the correct project is probably sufficient?
I have implemented those changes and hope that this is OK - but I need a hand to get the objects etc. clear in the introductions. Perhaps some translation?
On the Main page http://www.geni.com/projects/Anglo-Boere-Oorlog-Anglo-Boer-War-1899...
....we need to do a site map with links to - Battles, Camps, Casualties etc. etc. The top people involved in the war for both sides need to be listed and linked in the body of this text. I will look into that later today. I am in the process of moving the previously listed people to the projects where they need to be. I think that profiles can be linked to this project as well as the ones that are relevant to them, but do not need to be listed in the text I don't think.
http://www.geni.com/projects/Anglo-Boere-Oorlog-Anglo-Boer-War-1899... is the place to list and link Boers - there isn't a separate page for the upper echelons - is it necessary do we think?
http://www.geni.com/projects/Anglo-Boer-War-1899-1902-British-Armed... is where British troops are linked and we also have http://www.geni.com/projects/Anglo-Boer-War-1899-1902-Notable-Briti...
June I have changed to all races already after the initial post from Drummond.
If you are OK with that, that was the main intention,
Sorry I didn't see you have changed it.
Send teh translation links to my e-mail and I will gladly help.
I am fine with whatever June does. It only seemed that one project for each catergory - ie. WWII where my granfather and bother faught and the brother died I linked to your project.
But I am open for any suggestions.
J
I will wait till the end to see what you have decided. As it is at the moment
I am not sure who qualifies for what.
What about the First freedom war. (Eerste vryheidsoorlog) There died about six or seven boers. My Great grandfather Frederik Johannes Visser was one of them I`d like to know their names as well.
Martin Andreas Karl (Dries) Potgieter - I hope this helps - not sure how else to clarify
What we have in place ...
Anglo-Boer War - 1899-1902 the overview page http://www.geni.com/projects/Anglo-Boere-Oorlog-Anglo-Boer-War-1899... where anyone can be linked no matter what nation etc. but the only people who need to be linked in the text are the people who were up at the top - leaders, generals etc.
with sub-projects for those who fought
- the Boers - http://www.geni.com/projects/Anglo-Boere-Oorlog-Boer-War-1899-1902-...
- Notable British - http://www.geni.com/projects/Anglo-Boer-War-1899-1902-Notable-Briti...
- British Armed Forces - http://www.geni.com/projects/Anglo-Boer-War-1899-1902-British-Armed...
Then there are all the Camp projects and Casualties and battles etc.
WW1 - 1914-1918 see http://www.geni.com/projects/World-War-I/12366 (where any person involved can be added no matter where they were born) - the specific SA project is http://www.geni.com/projects/South-Africans-in-World-War-I/12369
WW2 - http://www.geni.com/projects/World-War-II/11528 - if you need a specific SA project it needs to be set up.
Martin Andreas Karl (Dries) Potgieter it's a much later war but if you come across any people who died in this war,
http://www.geni.com/projects/South-African-Border-War-1966-1989/24769 please add their profiles to the project.
Donovan, I tend to agree with you - particularly seeing that the text is all English to make it globally accessible.
There might be some merit, though, in keeping titles in multiple languages associated with the event, as someone might search for the project with the Afrikaans title (in this case). But then we'd better ensure that it IS the appropriate Afrikaans title and spelled correctly...
So, if I had to vote, I would vote for a multiple (relevant) language title.
Wow, June - I could not replicate your feat. I searched for 'oorlog' and got ONLY projects with that in its title...
Are you searching here http://www.geni.com/projects Johan?
I have this project coming up on page 3.. admittedly not a great result...
I have added 'oorlog' and 'Anglo-Boereoorlog' and 'Tweede Vryheidsoorlog' to the tags.. which should help searchers... (not sure how long it takes for the tags to register on the search algorithm)
Thank you, Donovan - those tags will surely help. I don't think we should change all the project names to conform to the correct spelling - it would be an onerous task. (And people may not search with the 'correct' spelling in the first place...!?) It is even misspelt (by me!) in the title of a project that I created - so I am not pointing fingers!
To clarify the search: I am searching 'oorlog' in Projects from the search box in the top bar on a Geni screen on Windows. I did get 116 hits over five pages. The first three or so pages were all hits in the project title (thus all our ABO/ABW projects), thereafter the rest were hits in the body text of the projects - they were all mostly Dutch projects that had reference to 'oorlog' somewhere inside. Not a bad result as all the ABO projects were listed first!
Sorry girls. But I know you will catch my drift.
Juds
I went to the projects page - http://www.geni.com/projects and added oorlog in the search box at the centre of the screen, just below the images.
The result http://www.geni.com/project/search?q=oorlog
