My Curtis DNA :
I put some time, effort and a chunk of 21st Century tech into finding my great, great grandfather Garret Curtis’s father. Garrett being the Elder male of the Salmonier, Newfoundland Curtis family.
As a member of Ancestry.com I took the DNA Test they offer and after about a year (2013) of steady research I’ve concluded that Captain Nathaniel Curtis of Roxbury, Massachusetts, 6 Aug. 1738 - 14 Jan. 1806 is Garrett’s father.
After making the DNA connection with the Curtis line of Captain William Curtis, of Nazeing, Essex, England, 12 Nov. 1592 - 8 Dec. 1672, I worked building a tree on him cross checking my DNA relationship using all the mothers and grandmothers as DNA guides.
I have positive DNA matches with Garrett’s great great grandfather, the Immigrants, Capt. William Curtis, his wife Sarah and the Eliot Clan.
I have positive DNA matches with William and Sarah’s son Issac, his wife Hannah and the Polley Clan as well as Hannah’s mother Susannah and the Bacon Clan.
I have positive DNA matches with Issac and Hannah’s son Issac, his wife Mehitabel and the Craft Clan as well as Mehitabel’s mother Patience and the Topliffe Clan.
I have positive DNA matches with Issac and Mehitabel’s son Capt. Nathaniel Curtis and his beloved, Anne Dillon. The rest is known by the paper trail with Garrett in Newfoundland and with my grandfather later in Boston, Massachusetts leading up to me.
I believe that Garrett was born in 1789 not 1798 when his mother Anne was 25 not 34 and that Capt. Nathaniel was 51 not 60. Being that Garrett delivered the sea trial tested “William Jewell” a 60 ton schooner to William Phippard, a St. Mary’s Merchant, in 1818, I have no doubt that Garrett was born in 1789. No one learns to be a Master shipbuilder, acquires a ship building facility, tools, stock and crew, contracts for and builds a ship as a teenager, it's just not possible.
I believe that Capt. Nathaniel loved and respected his and Anne’s bond and committed himself, his Massachusetts seafaring influence and personal wealth into giving Anne and their son Garrett a better, more privileged life in spite of the Captain's other life in Roxbury, Massachusetts.
As more of our Curtis blood kin have their DNA examined I will continue to monitor and add whatever facts may arise regarding my great great grandfather Garrett and his father.
