For everyone's information: I have added an historical document on GENI that lists those who asked Stuyvesant to surrender in September 1664.

Here is the link

http://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000031153339775

This serves as a snap shot of those who were people of some standing in New Amsterdam at the end of the first period of Dutch rule.
I have begun to cross-reference the document with profiles on GENI using a √ mark (This is done with the combined {alt} V key strokes).

So far this has been a quite instructive endeavor for me as it highlights the involvement of the various 'first' families of the colony. Among other observations, it is interesting to see how many Stuyvesant relatives successfully convinced Director Pieter to surrender...

Perhaps some of you may have suggestion as to how this list can be linked to this NOTABLE CITIZENS PROJECT.. so that it will be more visible to casual readers?

Being new to this, I just figured something out: I linked the Remonstrance as a document to the NOTABLE CITIZENS PROJECT:

I guess that's all that really needs to be done...

This is GREAT, Mike!
Now, the next challenge is... can we find the original document, in a scanned form? :-) (No, I'm not pushy)

It's a pretty significant historical document, another sign of the nature of the Dutch settlement (business first!)

More importantly, can we identify the people in the painting?

I am hoping for Grietjen, the most notorious woman in New Amsterdam, who mooned the British Navy ....

Sorry - here's the painting tagged to project & profile (provenance of the painting needed, I guess ...)

@Grietje Reyniers was in her sixties at the time of the surrender. Her "golden" days were well behind her. I read somewhere yesterday that there is a contemporary New Netherland document that characterizes her in her later years as more respectable but still cantankerous... (lol)
Is the @Anthony Jansen Janszoon van Salee signature on the document? I'll have to look..... Maybe the two of them were over near Coney Island that week? ;)

If only we could have a full timeline for the era, and then attach the documents to the events, and then attach the people to the events, too :-)
I've been experimenting with some concepts the past few weeks, and hope to come up with some reasonable recommendations that make sense and are feasible. Geni development workload permitting!...

Mike, for your info... Nearly four years ago we set up a Facebook community page for New Amsterdam. It has been VERY dormant for a long time.
However, I do think that there is substantial interest out there from people to learn more about New Amsterdam, so I think it's a matter of reaching out to potential followers and to maintain a steady stream of information.
I'm just saying this to have it in mind :-)

One thing we wanted is to bring brief stories to readers. Funny stories, or more serious ones. Possibly also news from institutions that research New Amsterdam, events... You name it.

Thanks. I've joined the New Amsterdam Project on FB...
On the general topic of Discussions on Geni: I wonder if there would be a way to inform new users of the resource of the Discussions and Projects such a a search tab or some such visual representation. It seems to me that many users aren't aware of the resources at their disposal.

Definitely, Mike. As said, it has been dormant for too long, and deserves to be overhauled. I'll try and come up with some ideas today.
