I have a question about the proper way to enter birthdates for people who were born in the Russian Empire before 1918. Their births were entered in the church records according to the Julian calendar (OS). After the Revolution, Russia (and its former provinces) changed to the Gregorian calendar (NS).
Which date should be entered, and how do you indicate whether it is OS or NS ? Does Geni have a provision for indicating both dates ?
My family were from Estonia, which became independent in 1918, and after that they used the Gregorian calendar. It is particularly an issue for people who were born under the old calendar and lived most of their life under the new calendar. For example, my father who was born on July 31, 1909 (OS), celebrated his birthday on August 13 (NS).

The following problem can also arise in some cases. Geni calculates the age at death under the assumption that the dates of the birth and of the death are given in one and same calendar system – either they both are Gregorian dates, or they both are Julian ones. If the birth date is given according to the Julian calendar, whereas the date of the death is according the Gregorian calendar, then an error by one in the calculated age at death is possible. For instance, if a person is born in Russia on February 25, 1917 (according to the Julian Calendar), and this person died on March 1, 1990, then the person's age at death will be 72, and not 73 (since the Julian date February 25, 1917, coincides with the Gregorian date March 10, 1917).
Does it matter?
As Jonathan I would also recommend that you writes thing in the About Me if the dates are confusing.
What we cannot have is an automatic Julian/Gregorian calculation simply because it varies a lot depending on where this person lived when the calendar change was made, and believe me: Even if a country has an official date for the change you cannot trust that written records changed at that date.
This problem has occurred in astrology software where it has been solved by program using the place of birth together with birth time as a reference for calculating the age either by Julian or Gregorian. It just needs two variables and a specification in program whether there was Julian or Gregorian in use at that time and that place. Seems simple.
