Someone has merged several James Murphy's that are not the same person. This has caused a real mess and I don't know how to fix it. Can someone look into this and untangle the different families? I tried to assign parents, but it wouldn't let me as it would spit the tree which is exactly what I wanted to do.

Can you please cut and paste a link in the discussion thread. If the merge is incorrect and was fairly recent, a curator can undo it.

1/23/2015 at 9:29 PM

If the profiles are living, then send me the link.

Hi there .I have my great uncle James Murphy in your discussions ,but his parents were James Murphy and Mary Donohoe.. James was born in Tullow Co.Carlow Ireland ,Not sure if there is a link ..but i only know james was born in Tullow on the 25 august 1872 in Tullow .I know have any other info on his life after that..

Even when it says it cannot assign parents, you can go into Profile View and Edit Profile in Relationships and Remove the incorrect parent relationship.

You have to remember to Save after removing the incorrect parents.

Let me know if you need help.

I looked at the first profile James Murphy, of Prince Edward Island and didn't see a recent merge that I could Undo. The Dec 2010 revision may have caused a problem.

1/26/2015 at 12:34 PM

Okay, I see the problem. 15 parents is daunting.

Here is one undo merge results:

James Murphy

James Michael Murphy, of NB & MT

1/26/2015 at 12:54 PM

Unknown Profile

James Michael Murphy, of NB & MT

I did another undo merge, but I think it was the same undo. There are still a large number of parents of the one profile.

Let me know if James Murphy is correct please.

1/26/2015 at 12:56 PM

I meant -- Unknown Profile since this is the one that you manage Wanda Signe Vermeers

I'm going to write the other managers and have them join this discussion because the other profile has way too many parents for anyone to sort out without input from the families.

1/26/2015 at 4:46 PM

The James Michael Murphy I manage is the son of James and Judith
"Julia" Thompson. I don't know how so many parents were added for him and he is also listed as his own brother.

1/26/2015 at 4:57 PM

I just checked the James Michael Murphy that I manage and it seems to be alright now. Thank you for your assistance. I hope the other James Michael Murphy profile will be fixed also.

1/26/2015 at 5:14 PM

Yes, I will email the other managers because the other profile is a problem. I'm glad I could help. The undo merge is a new tool and we can't unmerge before I think August 2014.

I don't know why people merge profiles with these REALLY common Irish names. I see it a lot.

Hi Wanda Signe Vermeers. Hatte Blejer on hiatus

I have 4 seperate James Murphy in my family tree. I didnt merge any of these and havent touched these profiles in 1+years.

I did receive an email an email from Private User stating

Re: James Michael Murphy

Managers of James Michael Murphy,

I am contacting you about this profile: James Michael Murphy, of NB & MT

this is not the brother of my grandfather, John Murphy, 1876-1917. His brother was James Cunningham Murphy, 1882-1932, died in Prestwick Scotland. My grandfather only had one brother

Could Gillian have merged them?

How should I proceed in unmerging them? Is there a way to block this from happening?

Trevor John Clowry

Please hold OFF. You just disconnected wives & children from someone else's James Michael Murphy, of NB & MT

Give us a few minutes to work on it!

James Murphy, of Cork

Needs data & parents

1/28/2015 at 3:54 PM

Folks - between emails and posts in this discussion group, I have been gathering information to work on the much merged James Michael.

@Erica - I will forward to you the private messages I got with additional information. Thanks for catching this!

1/28/2015 at 3:58 PM

We will MP all of them so they cannot be merged without a curator seeing them.

Trevor John Clowry - the more information that Geni users put on the profile and the surrounding profiles, the easier it is to prevent erroneous merges and to untangle families that are merged. That means dates and locations for birth and death and an About that also gives a brief biography.

1/28/2015 at 5:21 PM

James Murphy

Trevor John Clowry if we could trouble you to re enter your James' spouse & parents, and location data in the profile, we'll easier put this family back together.

I am very sorry for the smerge. By use of the curating MP tool it won't happen again.

This is one of yours. Please fill in more field data so we can rejoin him to the rest of his family correctly.

Hi
received another tranche of highly implausible "matches" today, mainly from the US, wrong dates, names, etc. Can the criteria not be tightened?

Private User - Geni has discussed improving matches for a long time. We are hopeful that this will happen, but I can't tell you when. In the meantime, here are things that we do to help:

(1) reject all the bad matches
(2) make sure that there are dates and locations in the profiles that do have a lot of matches due to a common name
(3) get a curator to MP profiles that are reasonably complete that are prone to being mismerged; there is a special discussion to ask or write one of us an email on Geni
(4) use the display name to uniquely name the profiles based for instance on location, as Erica has done above, e.g., James H Murphy, of Cork.

Any other suggestions Erica?

2/5/2015 at 3:08 PM

Thats exactly right.

Rejecting bad matches pays off in less errors for everyone. But the more complete the profile the less chance of a bad match -- and also easier to decide whether to reject / accept.

It appears that had I contributed to the mess by posting two photos of my great uncle James P Murphy in the profile of this James M Murphy. I apologize. The James P Murphy I mention was born 1884, son of James P Murphy and Elizabeth J Murphy, and was husband of Agnes O'Malley. I'm tempted to delete the two photos from James M Murphy's profile immediately, but have a concern about messing things up further and so will hold off until asked to do so. B-

Adding to my post of 2/5/2015, even if you do not know the exact dates and locations for your relative with a common name, put in a circa date by working backwards from descendants and put in a general location for place of birth and place of death. Even probably Ireland or probably Virginia are good possible locations.

You can Edit Location to type in something like "Ireland or Pennsylvania" if it's unclear if they were born in Europe or America.
