There is no evidence to back up that he was ever married to Kathleen. He was married twice, divorced once. His marriages were to Paula Stockton in 1972 and Lindi Jean Smith in 1980 whom he divorced in 1984. Laurence K. Avanzino is listed as Kathy Hilton's biological father and as Kathleen's first husband who is of Italian descent.

I just did a little more digging through records and found that Shumway divorced Paula in Apr 1980 and was married once more before then to Cheryl M Atherton in 1970 and divorced in 1972. I still cannot for the life of me find any connection between Shumway and Dugan.
