hi everyone. I am trying to trace my Jewish ancestors.
my 3 greats grandmother was Magdalena Elizabeth Barnat. Magdalena Elizabeth Petronella Wolmarans, b2c4d7e8f9
In a family where I know everything about my great uncles (all 6 of them) I cannot find anyone who could even tell me anything about her history. I would appreciate any help.
HI Lizette,
I found 17 persons with estates in the Transvaal and Free State Archives.
I can help with the Transvaal and Pieter Taljaard in the Free State.
There might be costs as there are always a price to pay. That is if you are in a hurry.
I am 90 km from Pretoria but Pieter goes to the Bloemfontein archive quite often.
If you are in a hurry I can supply you with information on other researchers that takes photos in the archives as well. But as said it is work and time and there fees vary from R60-R100 per estate but they take a few photos as to give you all the information.
Does this one look familiar?
You can give more detail and we might find the correct one

I will get them in any case when I go again Pam and Pieter as I said previously does it as a favour and to help users. As they are not to many I gave him the VAB - Free State list then we can try and find out.
Pam maybe we open a can of unknown people here. Like the one I found last week and you could immediately place the/a family.
Hold thumbs.
Hi Judi,
The first set of details seem to be the correct estate. But I am currently working on a great many branches of my family tree. I would be stuck paying thousands and thousands of rands for others to go to archives for me.
I was just hoping someone might recognize the name as belonging to their family.
Thank you so very much for the offer though! :-)
I am also interested in the BARNARD farmily, particularly Marthinus Christoffel Barnard born c 1850 and notice that in the NHK baptismal records for Potchefstroom (and surrounding areas) the name is often written as BARNAT. It appears that this is possibly how it sounded to the Dominee. Sometimes the same parent's surname is spelt Barnard and at others Barnat. Does not appear to be Jewish but Dutch/Afrikaans. I have found a few Wolmarans (and Wolmarand) married to Barnard/Barnat but not the names you seek.
Lizette, Pieter have sent a few barnats he has found between the OVS estates to me. I have it and it seems it is one line of Barnard that preferred Barnat.
That happens. It is the same in the Marnewick field where one family is Marneweck and one Manewyk. My moms family.
My husbands mom again were Dirkse van Schalkwyk but her fathers eldest brothers family goes under the name Dircksen van Schalkwyk.
I am loading as I go on. Just keep an eye open or email me and I will send the photos one to you. But you can download it from here under sources as well.
Charlette you are correct in your understanding. I saw one ABW(ABO) tombstone of children in the Irene camp where the names are Barnat, Barnard. A few childrens memorial added as one.
But in the case of the one I loaded yesterday the person as well as his daughter signed there name Barnat but I am sure they will fall in line with Barnard.
I am Afrikaans so if this is krom en skeef, please ignore.☺
Regards
Judi
