Hello, my name is Iris and I am doing some genealogy on the Chaki and De Leon families who were Sephardic Jews and lived in Istanbul in the late 1800s/early 1900s. I am having a lot of trouble finding much on them and I was wondering if your family was related to them. This is what I know about them. I am sure of Rebecca Chaki, born in Istanbul in 1875 and died in Poland in 1943. She was deported from France. She had three daughters and a son that I am aware of and all the children were born in Turkey but none stayed there. One daughter, Else Chaki, married the British explorer and historian, COL Stewart Francis Newcombe. I have a lot of information on her descendants. A son Joseph Chaki was believed to have moved to England before WWII and two other sisters were in France or England when the war started. I am not sure but I believe Rebecca's husband was Isaac or Elijah Chaki who was born in Turkey as well between 1850-1875. Her father was a De Leon and supposedly a famous banker or jeweler of the Sultan under the Ottomans. If you have any information at all that may be relevant for me or have any suggestions where I may look, I would appreciate it. Sincerely, Iris.

Hello Jacques! Thank you for your quick response. No problem on the questions and I totally understand. I am currently living in a small town outside outside of Boston, Massachusetts although I am originally from the Atlanta, Georgia area. I am doing this family tree for my god son named "Thomas Rayburn" as a gift for him. His mother, Clare Lockhart-Mummary, is a direct descendant of Rebecca Chaki so I am trying to reconstruct this line for the gift. Clare is the great grand daughter of Rebecca Chaki through her daughter Elizabeth or Else Chak. If you look up their profiles on Geni they are public and you can see them Technically I am a second cousin many times removed from this family as well but I am primarily doing it as a gift for my god son. I hope this helps. I am not too optimistic about finding much as I think there is not much information out there and they were scattered to the four winds between WWI and WWII. Any hints that you can provide would be helpful though. Thanks again. Iris.

Hello,
My name is Laurence and I am also looking for information regarding Rebecca Chaki. She was a cousin of my grand-parents, deported with them at Auschwitz in 1943; However, on my documents, although she is born also in 1875 at Istanbul, her maiden name was not De Leon but Amon. There is only one Rebecca Chaki on Le Mémorial de la Shoah or on Yad Vashem sites. Do you have any other information about her? Could you confirm her maiden name? Amon or De Leon? Do you confirm that her husband was Isaac or Elijah Chaki as mentionned by Iris? and that she had 4 children? I would be glad to know more about her life.

Hello Lawremce!
What a pleasure to hear from you. I did find that information on Rebecca Chaki being deported to Auschwitz but I was unsure about her birth year. I was only told that her madien name was De Leon and the family was not sure about that so you are probably correct about her madien name. I believe her husband was Elijah Chaki and I believe that the information on her children is correct. I am the godmother of one of Rebecca's great great grandchildren. Most of the Else Chaki descendents are in England now. Else met a British offcier during the war and they fell in love and married in London after the war. His name was Sir Francis Newcombe. I don't really know anything about the family history in Turkey except that Chaki is a Sephardic Jewish name.
