I would like to determine if this Matias Schalek is a match for Mathais Schalek, my wife's 3rd great grandfather. The information I have on Mathias Schalek is that he was born 23 Feb 1812 in Prague, and died 28 Mar 1912 in NYC. He was married to Fredericka Schmelker in Prague around Feb 1845. On his death certificate, Mathais's parents were given as Solomon and Theresa.
Matias and Mathais seem close enough, but it is not a definite match. A lot of Jews seemed to have similar names. Can anyone shed new light here?
Both names are variants of the Hebrew for Matthew. Randy Schoenberg should comment, but the details of the two families look very very similar.
Obviously Wolf is not Solomon but Wolf may have been the secular name and Solomon the Hebrew name.
