My grandparents, Ernst and Alice Lichtblau, commissioned Malva Schalek to do pastel portraits of my father, George, and his brother, Hans, as young boys. The Schaleks were related to the Lichtblaus through the Knopfer family, Ernst's brother-in-law. The portraits were in Alice's apartment until her death, then given to their subjects. They are respectively in my mother's and uncle's houses in DC and NYC.

That's a wonderful thing to have. A real treasure.

My aunt and uncle commissioned a woman painter friend of theirs who was a fine artist to do portraits of their entire family and my cousin now has all 4 portraits.

Randy Schoenberg curates Malva Schalek's profile and may know people who know her.

Thanks, all. I never knew Malva Schalek was a relative until I saw her name here.
