Unconfirmed Stories:
1 - John was illegitimate. His mother married a man named Hammond or Hammons when he was very young. When he found out he changed his surname to Lee as that was the only name his real father was known by; "the Lee".

Here's the mystery.
John's mother was Margaret "Peggy" Hammons b 1855, his father was a "Mr. Lee" Peggy was not married to Mr. Lee and her parents agreed to take the child, but he had to be raised as John Hammons. John married to Margaret Essary and after 1904 changed his name to Lee. I cannot find any court record of the change, so I believe he may have just done it.
Peggy's parents were James Preston Hammons & Rachel Simpson."
Margaret may have had more children in another relationship; surname ICE.
There are LOTS and LOTS of Lee's in this area of Missouri.
