William Owen "Bill" Irwin asked:
[http://wiki.geni.com/index.php/Profile_Images,_Guidelines Profile Images, Guidelines] I would like to know what is the GENi Standard for images.
I read the Guidelines and [http://www.geni.com/company/terms_of_use Terms of Use updated April 2, 2013]
I've spent many hours working on images only to have them removed. I was adding maps and flags, I then was told that should only be the secondary image. I made markers for Unknown Husband, Wife Etc., I made Crossed Flags for English American Immigrants, French American Immigrants, Etc. only to have them removed. I understand that most seem to think a drawing of a ship is better, ok but why remove the secondary image.
I find the images far more professional and engaging than the shadow. I countless maps I added in the time I’ve been on GENi gave me the most insight on world geography in my life. Again only to have them removed without my knowledge and acceptance.
I fully believe that the best image should be on the profile and when a better one comes along it should be updated. I even went so far as only adding personal images such as Headstones on other peoples work and adding images other than that on my own work only to have the images removed for my own profile. I have had requests to remove images and do so immediately, For instance I had the wrong Brothers image in place for his sibling. I had new information about where they lived, or died.
I am very frustrated about the loss of content and arbitrary removal of my own work and images that include an attribution giving credit to the photographer or artist that generated the original image used for the profile picture and include the original URL.

Let's continue to address the issue in this discussion, and perhaps update the project overview page here

I usually do personal photo if possible, grave stone second.. beyond that, I leave it, but that's just my personal preference. I use to add the family crest and images for locations, but that ended up being additional work and creating issues, as some people don't know how to change the primary photo. So grave stones would get uploaded, but the profile would be stuck with a flag, because no one knew there was additional media and how to set it. I'll generally only remove a photo if there is a better one to replace it or the photo makes little sense (e.g. picture of a flower). Additionally, generic photos slow down the tree loading, particularly in tree view, so I prefer to have the default photos in such cases.

William, it seems to me that some of the images you uploaded might seem like they belong to #6 on the image guidelines page, but note that those refer to places, things, et. al. that are intimately tied to that profile's identity. For instance, every person who came from Britain shouldn't have a British flag as their profile picture. However, the progenitor of some clan might have that clan's tartan. But every member of the clan should not. For the vast majority of cases, families will consist mostly of profiles with no images attached. For your example of the drawing of a ship, it would be fine for a person who immigrated on that ship, but not their descendants. Does that help?
I agree strongly that an image, used as a profile image on a shared tree, needs to say something about the actual profiles person, and should not be used as a personal marker.
There is a South Africa biased image library here: http://www.geni.com/projects/CUZZIN-Profile-Image-Library/23486
It may offer something useful, even if it is just an idea... (most of the images uploaded so far have used a monument or a memorial as a theme)
William Owen "Bill" Irwin thank you for making the images available on http://www.geni.com/projects/Provenance-and-Images/media/1020
One comment: be careful about historical dating. The American flag used applies to after 1776 (i didn't count stars & stripes so maybe much later?). So wouldn't be used for immigrants in Colonial America.
If the profile that an image is being added to is for someone not in your direct line or for aunts/uncles (etc), why not just add it to the media tab and send a message to those that manage the profiles that a new pix has been added and let them make the decision about making it the primary pix??? (Or does the 1st pix become the primary pix automatically???) Since not everyone may not know how to make a pix the primary one, add a comment referring them to the geni help site... (I know, this takes extra time, but if you are doing a favor for those following the profile by adding a pix, then an extra minute or two to do this is also worth it...others may learn something in the process...)
I know I am still learning how to use the media tab and adding pix for family members. So far most of what I have added have been head shots or pix of headstones or cemetery entrances--so no conflict with the guidelines so far...
I haven't looked at the geni help for photos in quite some time, but is there possibly going to be a need for more directions there??? (ie. how do I make a pix the primary one; how do I add more people to a pix?--this one took me a while to figure out just recently, etc). Granted, for those who have been with Geni for a long time, this is going to be "old hat" info, but for those new... I feel sure that many of you who are very, very familiar with Geni can remember back to your newby days and may have some tips to share there on "how to..." work around in the Photo section. Just a thought...
Patricia Ann Scoggin you make good sense - (sin) - I am very Afrikaans.
Personally I dislike those grey nobody profiles. It looks so like a nobody. Personal feeling.
As for Private User an my own images we have had lots of users on the SA tree complimenting us and asking for images. I have also once asked a curator from the Netherlands to make me one.
Bit I feel very strongly that nobody should change a profile image when there already is one. If I have another I prefer, I always ask the manager- or person who is the first name on the profile if I can.
But again - personal preference.
I also do rather have photos or graves.
Another thing I love to have is in the case of provinces or towns or churches add something relevant to that.
Have a good day.

One key point from Donovan's comment is that a new profile picture should REPLACE an existing one. The existing profile picture should not be deleted first.
By 'replacing', the previous image should remain in that profile's Media tab.
How? Use the profile's Media tab to upload a new image, then select that just uploaded image and click the button that says to make it the profile's image.
Don't know if this is the place to put this question or not because it is "techy", but it is images related... (if not here where should I ask this question???)
If I download a pix from my iPhoto program on my computer and later delete it from there because I have moved the pix to a genealogy file folder elsewhere on my computer, will there be a problem with the pix in Geni?????? Most of my pix are in a doc/pix file in my genealogy files, so this isn't a problem at the moment, but sometimes I start with them in iPhoto before moving them to the appropriate family file folder.
I was sleeping & when I woke up this question came to mind as I have @ least 1 pix in iPhoto that I want to add to my Geni photo albums.
In other words - a profile can have multiple images tagged to it on the gallery (media tab). The key point is knowing how to set a "default" image: the one that shows in the tree. And of course the most personal / profile referential should be that one.
To tag an image from an image stored in a project media repository to a profile:
Go to the project image. Example:
http://www.geni.com/photo/view?album_type=project&photo_id=6000...
Underneath see the editable fields. Select "in this photo" (Edit). This opens up a box with default text (first name last name). Type the profile name (tip: visit it first to make it active on your "short list"). Select "done" when complete.
Same procedure as for documents.

Private User I use images that are related as far as possible for the last year. There are still others that I will get to, but I do feel one must respect each persons feeling.
I will get to all when asked or after doing what I love best. Research and help building the world tree with as many proven research from the Archives as possible. That doesn't come cheap.☺
Archival Research respositories images, when I have personally done research or paid to get it done, there I feel is absolute not against any rules. Or Mike Stangel have I got it wrong again in my Afrikaans way.
Must we respect users images or replace it when we become a secondary manager?
Please help me out with this one again. Afrikaans and English are miles apart and I am not so technical in PC's.

Private The guidelines for images are quite clear in that the image ideally should be personal, and when it isn't personal ie. "When applying images to profiles on a large scale, it is advisable to first consult other users active in the area, including the individual managers of the profiles."
A overly generic image, for example an image of archive registers, clearly needs consultation before use as a profile image... an example: Martha Maria Henning, b5c1d3
This has nothing to do with primary or secondary managers, all managers have equal rights, as do users who work in the same area of the tree...
Personal markers or the fact that you do archival research also need not be an issue or need to be displayed.
I will take more care in dating flags Thank you Erica Howton for the valuable input.
I want and encourage anyone to use the images I load into GENI, I have a talent for making them and freely encourage others to use them as they wish.
Theresa: When you click on the Media tab for a profile, then "Add Photo", you should then be taken to a page that has 4 different 'upload' options/tabs:
Simple Uploader (up to 5 different pictures at once; can be in different places on your computer before the upload).
Advanced Uploader (often best if all the pictures are in one 'folder' on your computer ... can select more than 5!)
Browse Your Albums -- to let you select previously upload pictures to attach to (tag to) a different profile than the first profile it was uploaded for)
Picassa Desktop -- specific to Windows-based computers, if photos are in 'Picassa Desktop'.
I created 6 icons that could be used for "Died Young" with angels, but don't know if I should add them to that icon site or not. 3 of them are in color (pink, blue, gold) holding an infant and 3 have a child standing beside the angel. I think I used the one in blue for this profile: Severt Anderson
Erica, I sent you an email to your home address with them (I know you prefer to keep Geni stuff in Geni) to see what you thought of them...
I would use them for my direct line only and for those I have added to the tree. The further back in time I go I will check with the co-managers before adding them. I do like angels, so they all have angels. I realize that others may not be as interested in angels as I am, so will attempt to respect the general consensus before adding.
Thanks Bill for the input.
I will add them to the library so others may use them if they choose to.
