Before coming to Australia Bernard worked in a dairy in central London. Cows would be brought in and kept underground supplying fresh milk for London then returned to the countryside. Whole milk would be ladled into each persons jars from x cart. Many years later Bernard was charged with selling unpasteurized milk from the kiosk on the semaphore pier against regulations. He wrote to the paper defending the practise based on his experience in London. Source Trove.
He worked as a clerk at ICI in Adelaide.
He probably had major differences of faith with his father, a baptist minister and worshipped as an Anglican during his life in Australia. He played the organ at the cathedrals in Adelaide and geraldton.
