** migrated with brothers, uncles and/or cousins to SC, GA, and AL.
Not surprising for the time frame; many conflicts exist amongst researchers’ findings. Especially regarding common names such as John and James Powell. The info gathered below is an effort to use common tree outlines/theories set forth by others. Then attempt to use logistics to draw some reasonable conclusions to further support who’s who in the Powell Family found in Cherokee Indian Lands (1800’s) of Western SC, Northern GA and Northern AL.
John Powell 1715-1783 Married to Mary O’Neal. (Some have him older, born around 1686, but given the dates of his reported children’s births, perhaps he is being confused with his father.)
WHERE: Starting in Rappahannock/Essex/Richmond County, VA > Orange County (later Culpeper County), VA > Orange County, NC > Burke County, NC.
NOTES for John Powell 1715-1783: Many state birth as Occupacia, Rappahannock, Virginia, USA. Which was first formed and became extinct, by 1692, to form Essex and Richmond Counties. It was re-established in 1833. Therefore at the time of his birth, it would have been Essex or Richmond County. Burke, located in North Western Mountains, is logistically close to the SC areas that were later settled by Powell’s.
WHEN for John Powell 1715-1783:
In 1748 Owned property on Staunton River, Orange County, Virginia.
In 1749 Orange County was used to form Culpeper County, Virginia.
In 1753 Property in Culpeper County, Virginia.
In 1761-1770 Evidence of him in Orange County, North Carolina.In 1777 Evidence of him in Burke County, North Carolina.In 1777 Burke County was formed from Rowan County, North Carolina. In 1791 Parts of Burke and Rutherford formed Buncombe County, North Carolina.

Alleged Children of John Powell and Mary O'Neal: ** migrated with brothers, uncles and/or cousins to SC, GA, and AL.
1 . John Powell 1740-1802 Married to Alice Brewer. (This John Powell, as well as Alice Brewer, are much debated and mixed in with multiple conflicting trees)WHERE: Lived and died in Orange Co. NC.
NOTES: Had a WILL which names children
DECENDANTS MIGRATING:
-- Had at least one son, James 1759-1855**; All three listed here made a stop in Pendleton, SC and died in Blount County, AL
-- Had at least two grandsons to migrate; James Powell 1785-1870** and George A. Powell**. George died in Blount, AL~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ 2. Robert Powell 1749-1826**WHERE: Starting in VA > Orange Co. NC > Pendleton, SC > Franklin Co., GA (Across state line from Pendleton)
NOTES: Several of Robert’s sons stayed in same area for life. Pendleton, SC, Franklin, GA and Rabun, GA county lines shifted and evolved during this time. Likely folks didn’t move but instead the county lines and names changed.
DECENDANTS MIGRATING:-- Had son, Tilman Powell 1780-1850** Franklin, GA entire life. NOTE: Franklin Co. once consisted of numerous counties in GA and parts of SC in the general region.
-- Had son, Almond Powell 1792-1857** Pendleton, SC > Pickens Co. SC (1826 Pendleton became Pickens & Anderson Co.)
-- Had son, Edley Powell 1792-1864** Pendleton, SC > Rabun Co. GA entire life. (Across state line from Pendleton, also near Franklin, GA) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3. Elias Powell 1754-1832WHERE: Stayed in Burke, NC
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. Abraham Powell 1755-1815**WHERE: Orange/Rowan County, SC > Pendleton SC (Rowan and Orange Counties are next to one another and part of one county was used to create the other)
DECENDANTS MIGRATING:-- Had at least one son, Abraham W. Powell 1790-1863**, who moved to Habersham, GA > Gilmer, GA > Cullman, AL.
NOTES for Abraham W. Powell 1790-1863: Some state that Abraham W. Powell is son of John Powell 1740-1802. It is possible. However, John’s WILL doesn’t provide for Abraham. And while John Powell 1740-1802 has at least three descendants in Pendleton at same time as Abraham W. Powell, those three go directly on to Blount, Alabama. Only a handful of Powell’s were in Pendleton 1800-1820 (which was formed in 1790 and dissolved into Pickens and Anderson Counties by 1826). See list below of all Powell's in Pendleton, SC in 1800.
-- Had at least five grandchildren, belonging to Abraham W. Powell 1790-1863 to migrate:
--- James Riley Powell 1815-1890** Pendleton, SC > Habersham, GA > Lumpkin, GA > Gilmer, GA > Fannin, GA
--- Daniel Newton Powell 1818-1900** Pendleton, SC > Habersham, GA > Lumpkin, GA > Gilmer, GA > Pickens, GA > Rhea, TN
--- Jeremiah A. Powell 1823-1893** Pendleton, SC > Habersham, GA > Gordon, GA > Clark, Indiana
--- Lucinda Powell-Mullinax 1825-1909** Habersham, GA > Lumpkin, GA > Pickens, GA
--- Jane Aljaline Powell-Chastain** Habersham, GA > Gilmer, GA > Gordon, GA > Cullman, AL.
NOTES for Daniel Powell and sister Jane Aljaline Powell-Chastain: Aljaline lived next door to brother Daniel in GA. Daniel and Aljaline married two Chastain siblings - James Witt Chastain and Mary A. Chastain who happen to live in Pendleton with their father Obediah Chastain. They migrated through Habersham County, GA when their father won Indian Land Lottery which locale was identified as “Chastain’s”. Both married in Gilmer County, GA. Their uncle, Sally Allen's brother married a Chastain and his family also moved to Gilmer, GA and settled in same area. CHASTAIN, POWELL and ALLEN are closely tied together in Pendleton, SC and then in GA.
-- Had one probable son, Allen Powell Sr. 1786-1878**; Pendleton, SC > Indian Land GA > Gordon Co. GA
NOTES for Allen Powell Sr: May have been the cousin or brother Abraham W. Powell. Both followed same path and had adult children in both Gilmer and neighboring Gordon Co. GA by 1850. Virtually all other Powell’s in this area in 1850 are accounted for and belonging to these two men with exception of Jane Powell 1795-1880** who some state maiden name was Davis and was widowed from William Powell. Same trees state this William is son of Benjamin, and grandson of Solomon. Although very little supporting documentation provided. It is interesting she moved her family thru almost same path and same timing to same locale in GA as Abraham W. Powell. She was in Habersham in 1830 living near Abrabham W. Powell of 1790. Then Jane was in Gilmer in 1840 & 1850 and so was Abraham, in separate households. Perhaps she was widow of William Powell of Pendleton SC? Or Richard L. Powell of same area? Or is the sister in law of either Abraham W. Powell or Allen Powell Sr.?
18 00 Census of Pendleton, SC. ALL Powell’s in area. Important to note, the two eldest Powell’s first in Pendleton are Abraham Powell 1755-1815 and Robert Powell 1749-1826.
--Abraham Powell born before 1755. Believed to be son of John Powell 1715-1783
--Robert Powell born before 1755. Believed to be son of John Powell 1715-1783
--James Powell born between 1756-1774. Believed to be son of John Powell 1740-1802
--John Powell born between 1756-1774. Believed to be son of John Powell 1740-1802
--William Powel born between 1756-1774. Likely the son of Abraham Powell 1755. Could Jane above be this William's wife?
--James Powell born before 1784.
