Family Facts: Heraldry
According to Wilhelm Mauer who was a Speidel family researcher from Tübingen, Germany, there were "many, many Coats-of-Arms granted to members of the Speidel family during the Middle Ages. Often the same Coat-of-Arms was granted to different members of the same family, although some changes were made, as well as changes in color."

Johann Siebmacher's "Grosses und Allgemeines Wappenbuch", a very old 35 volume set of books detailing the armorial collection of German nobility, shows some of the Coats-of-Arms granted to members of the Speidel family.

Speidel Coat-of-Arms Granted to Ludwig Speidel by Emperor Frederick III, dated at Linz, March 20, 1467. The original is in Vienna, Austria.

Speidel Coat-of-Arms Also granted to Ludwig Speidel by Emperor Frederick III, dated at Linz, March 20, 1467. The original is in Vienna, Austria. A description is as follows:
Coat-of-Arms: in red, three iron colored wedges
Helmet: two arms dressed in red, a gold seal raised Decken: red, gold

Speidel Coat-of-Arms Granted to Johan Jakob Speidel, representative of the Emperor and ambassador at the Council in Ragensburg 1666.

Speidel Coat-of-Arms Granted to a Speidel at Neckarsulum in Würtemberg, served by servants and in ownership of land.

Speidel Coat-of-Arma Shown on the covers of "Beiträge zur Geschichte der Familie Speidel - Die Balinger Speidel" and "Beiträge zur Geschichte der Familie Speidel - Der Holzgerlinger Müllerzweig der Speidel" both by Wilhelm Mauer. I am not sure who the Coat-of-Arms was granted to but it is very similar to the Arms granted to Johann Jakob Speidel.

Very interesting! I study English, Welsh, Scots coats of arms which have very different rules than continental European coats of arms. They are very useful in making family connections where accurate documents or no documents are available. Fun decoding them!
