Geni Cousins

I kinda like the different ways that we do this on Geni and WikiTree. The Geni version is this: "A.J. Jacobs is Kyle Dane's 7th cousin once removed's ex-wife's first cousin once removed!"

Whereas WikiTree's is: "AJ Jacobs and Kyle Dane have 21 degrees of separation".

It's the same connection, just different ways of describing it.

Hello! I am apparently A.J.'s 57th cousin, 7 times removed.
Is this site legit? I'm only asking because, according to Geni, I am also related to Abraham Lincoln, Davy Crocket, Obama, and Hitler. Oh yeah and Kevin Bacon is my 12th cousin... not even any times removed or anything!
SO is this real???? Honestly?

I check my relationship paths and correct as I go along.

For American genealogy, crossing the ocean into our European ancestors is the big question. Once we do for one we have the possibility of quite amazing interconnections. But the further back in time you go the harder it can be and a generality based on the mathematical probabilities is a good way to think of it.

But we have 400 years of records in the USA, that's about 10 generations. So if your connection is sideways - your cousin married his cousin, for example - you may not have a blood line, but you have a proven and provable genealogy.

And if his cousin has a "gateway" ancestor, lo and behold! A thousand years of written history may open up for you.

It's a web and we're all caught in it. :)
