Although a family tree on Ancestry.com has shown Orlando as the son of Christopher and Elizabeth Shaffer, I find this hard to believe as they would have been 14 and 15 when he was born - and all their other children over a decade older. Christopher's entire family and their farm appear next to Orlando in the 1850 census in Tazewell, Illinois. My guess is that Christopher is either Orland's uncle or cousin, but not his father.
