Focusing on Geert Jochums a bit today, eventually reailsed that over time the spelling changed to Jochems and that his children used it as a surname after 1811.

I cannot find any birth record for a Geert with a father named Jogum, Jochum, Jochem or even Jakob.

It occurred to me that perhaps Jochums as shown on his marriage record is not a patronym at all, perhaps when he marries in 1756 his family is already using a surname?

I suspect that Geert may even have married a cousin.
His wife Roelfijen is the daughter of Aefien Jochems who's father is Jochem Harms Hummelen.

Jochem Harms has 10 children between 1699 and 1718 and four of them have the name Hummelen recorded at their birth, so obviously it is a not yet set as a surname.
It is quite easy to guess that some of his children would eventually have gone by the surname Jochems whilst others used Hummelen.

So is Geert Jochems a grandson of Jochem Hummelen?

Jochem's three sons are:
Harm Jochems
Jacob Jochems
Jan Jochems Hummelen

I suppose the first logical thing to do is search for their deaths or marriages but...

there is already a potential candidate:
Diever, doopboek (1726-1811; DTB 35), 27 maart 1731, pagina 16
Gedoopt: Geert, geboren te Smilde, zoon van Harm.

This is the only record in Drenlias for a boy baptised in Diever between 1720 and 1750 where the father's name matches one of the potential variations that Jochem's 3 sons could use.

Geert's wife, Roelfjen Egberts (Bisschop), is born in 1738 so 1731 would be a typical age for her husband.

Jacob appears to be having children in the 1720s:

Diever, doopboek (1726-1811; DTB 35), 3 maart 1726, pagina 1
Gedoopt: Avijn, geboren te Van de brug, dochter van Jacob Hummel.

Diever, doopboek (1726-1811; DTB 35), 3 november 1728, pagina 8
Gedoopt: Margijn, geboren te De Brug, dochter van Jacob Hummelen.

Jan in the 1740s:

Diever, doopboek (1726-1811; DTB 35), 14 februari 1745, pagina 46
Gedoopt: Jacob, geboren te Dieverbrugge, zoon van Jan Jacobs Hummelen en Albertien Luirts.

Diever, doopboek (1726-1811; DTB 35), 19 februari 1747, pagina 49
Gedoopt: Luurt, geboren te Dieverbrugge, zoon van Jan Jacobs Hummelen en Albertien Luurts.

It's frustrating not knowing whether i cannot locate these records because they never existed, or they have been lost or are they just not in Drenlias, or am i not searching for the correct terms.
