Birth date: c. 1654 OR 1658

Does anyone have sources or strong opinions?

Marriage date on profile 3/12/1679, Suzanne b. 1691

http://www.e-family.co.za/ffy/g5/p5205.htm - 1650 according to Pieter Coertzen, The Huguenots of South Africa 1688-1988 (28 Wale Street, Cape Town: Tafelberg Publishers Limited, 1988), p.165; date estimated by compiler.

Boucher - page 119 French Speakers at the Cape

"Cordier arrived in 1688 with his wife, François Martinet, and three daughters Susanne, Jeanne and Louise. ..."

Page 231 " It is possible that François Martinet, wife of Louis Cordier, was born in the province of Champagne. Her huisband was has very tentatively been included among the settlers fronm Orléanais, althoug he too may have come from the north-east."

Thanks June. That's useful to add to the profile.
Suzanne's birthdate as 1691 is a typo hmm? 1681.

The marriage date suggests her birthdate is before 1663 (presuming she would not have been married under 16 yrs old)

Unless anyone has sources to back the definite 1658, I wonder if we shouldn't put her birthdate in as : before 1663?

Oh sorry - I see, as I'm pasting it onto the profile that you're telling me Coertzen estimates it at 1650. I wonder why he assumes she was 29 at marriage?

The FFYP has Suzanne Cordier b. 1678 - before the 1679 marriage?

In fact, the FFYP date for her last child - Philippe Cordier b. 26 Oct 1698 - would make her 48 at his birth. Unlikely to my mind. I think we've got enough info to suggest Coertzen was wrong in his estimated birthdate at 1650.

In my 1988 edition of Coertzen - the Afrikaans version, though - he doesn't estimate her birthdate at all. Delia Robertson - you might be interested.

If we assume her childbearing years to be most likely between 14 and 44 yrs - her birthdate range is 1654-1664. I think?

No - Delia estimates the age - I haven't read the extract from Coetzen and yes Typo.
Not sure of the source of the 1679 marriage - very precise

Sorry - late but was out at wedding venue

The transcription of their marriage certificate is attached to her profile - I ordered it from a French site.

The girls during this time in Europe were inclined to get married in their early or mid-twenties. I'd say DOB c 1755 - 1759, bearing in mind that Philippe was born 1698.

Thanks Jansi. You're a star detective as always.

How do people prefer to show uncertain birthdates?
As a c the middle date; or as a range between the two dates?

I like the range option better myself.

Private User - wondering where I can find some source on common marriage for young women in Europe in 17th century. Can you help? Thanks much.
