Please list any places mentioned in slave names that you find here so that we can collaboratively come up with some answer. If you know where the places are please tell us. I will start adding those we know to an editable document attached to this project document. Link to follow!

Where were these places referred to in the names of Slaves?

van Saffena Patman

van Rio de la Goa,

Wow my friend. I found one on passengers and ship info this morning but in Netherlands. I wan't to ask Gauteng West if we can use it for Genesis. I am sure BOB will.

I have am African slave lady in my tree but from the Ashanti tribe in Ghana, suppose this project is only for SA slaves ?
Fanny Haarloo

It is South African slaves - but maybe you need another project Anne-Marie?

van Rio de la Goa: VOC trading post/fort at Rio de la Goa, Maputo, Mozambique (1720-1729)

Due to extreme setbacks its name was changed to “ Fort Lijdzaamheid” [Fort of Patience/Long-suffering].

Interestingly there was also a Dutch-built Fort Lijdzaamheid located on the coast of Ghana

This is a great resource for places:

The Atlas of Mutual Heritage is a database with information, maps, drawings, prints and paintings of locations related to the Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie, VOC) and the West-Indische Compagnie (WIC).

Thanks Don - I have bought a copy of From Bengal to the Cape - Bengali Slaves in South Africa by Ansu Datta

Will report back - anyone else got it?
