It was written around 1967... before Singer/Actor-Performer, Bobby Darin knew that His Mother, Vivian "Polly" Walden-Cassotto, was actually His Grandmother. It was mentioned that as a young girl, Miss Walden, got the showbiz bug and ran away from home to become a performer.
At the turn of 20Th. Century, Broadway, Vaudeville was at it's peak, and Silent Films were at their infancy. Under the name of "Paula Walden", her skill as a Singer-Performer is noted. Though it noted that she sang in Vaudeville... her real love and pursuit for Broadway Musicals were there also, and may have also performed in some limited local area productions, but marriage would change all that.
Being distantly related to Stage Actress-Performers, Maude Adams, Edith McAlpin, Donah Benrimo, etc. No matter how great or minor she had access to The Showbusiness Community at that time.
It is mentioned that Vivian had dental problems and later, became addicted to morphine... which was a family issue.
During "The Great Depression", Broadway and Vaudeville was in serious trouble, as many theaters began to close and/or convert to
movie houses... many live stage and vaudeville performers lost work. Vivian, as Mrs. Cassotto, endured in a state of poverty... living in
The Bronx, she and her Daughter, did what they could.
With the unexpected birth of Her Grandson, Walden Robert "Bobby Darin" Cassotto and to quell gossip and scandal... she took "Bobby" as her own.
Seeing that "Bobby" was showing tablet at a very young age... she took him to a number of live Stage and Vaudeville shows that remained to inspire him... which it did.
"Polly's Dental Issues"...
Under the name of "Paula Walden", Vivian Walden-Cassotto became a noted singer on The Vaudeville Stage. Her voice range was quite diverse... having the monicor as "The Girl With The Thoundsand Voices".
If her voice range was that pronounced... then this could explain why she may have had dental issues... making her teeth and/or jaw ache acutely?
I have come to this conclusion, as I have a Cousin, who became an Opera Singer and she had voice range that was wide. One day while singing... she hit a singing note, that injured her sinus cavity. Unfortunately, she could not sing opera like that ever again.
So... it becomes obvious that singing prefessionally can sometimes be unpredictable.
Thank you Erica... Though I never met any members of "The Cassotto Family", we all lived in the same Bronx Neighborhood. Some years ago... I was acquainted with one of Cousin Bobby's former and Early Girl Friend, thatlived a few blocks away from where I lived. She spoke highly of him. She later married a NYPD Detective.
