I question the identification of this William Arms, I as a son of William "The Merchant" Hearne.

The Geni overview for William Arms says that someone (name not referenced) has discovered his 1655 baptismal record of in Jersey. Of course, the next question is who discovered it and why do they think it is this William? I suspect whoever it was thinks it was this William because he supposedly came from the Channel Islands (based on what record?) and this is a baptismal record for a man with the right name at about the right time.

So, I do what I always do. I go out to the web to see if someone has made this assertion and defended it. It's easy to find these two postings in GenForum:

http://genforum.genealogy.com/arms/messages/159.html

http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?Brelade::arms::3...

Now we know the likely source of this claim is Jeanine Knight. She implies (but does not say explicitly) that the baptism record spells his name William Arme and that he was son of William Arme and Sara Fautrarte. I can accept that, although I'd like to know more. The record isn't indexed at FamilySearch, so we'd need more effort to get a copy or extract.

My next question is how does someone know that the father William Arme in the baptismal record is William Hearne the Merchant? The information on Geni looks suspicious to me. The Merchant is supposedly born 1630 in London and died 1691 in Maryland. He had another wife who was the mother of all his other children, and among those children is a William Hearne born in 1688 (33 years after William Arme). Did William the Merchant really go to Maryland in 1675 but have son William who went to Massachusetts who went to Massachusetts before 1677?

Maybe so, but the difference in names (Arme, Hearne), the difference in location (Massachusetts, Maryland), the difference in time (1655, 1688), and the existence of two sons both named William lead me to think this connection is someone's mistake or fantasy. It seems more likely that William Arms of Deerfield, Mass. was (perhaps) the son of William Arme and Sara Fautrarte, about whom nothing further is known (at the moment) and that father William was not William the Merchant.

I agree with Justin. I have seen nothing which would lead me to believe William Hearne is the father of William Arms.
What I have: William Arms b. abt 1654 Jersey, England, d. August 25, 1731 Deerfield, Mass., served in King Philip's War 1676, married Joanna Hawkes Nov. 21, 1677 Deerfield, Mass. daughter of John and Elizabeth Hawkes.
Anderson in The Great Migration 1634-5 vol.3 page 260 says the marriage took place in Hatfield, Mass.
Torrey in New England Marriages says Hatfield/Hadley/Deerfield.

As a side note, there is a ton of information on the web about the Fautrart family from Jersey. Someone looking for a project could probably fill out Sara's ancestry fairly quickly -- assuming they could figure out which of the two women by that name she was ;)

Hearing no objection ...

Our family records indicate only 3 offspring of William "The Merchant" Hearne: William Jr. (my husband's ancestor), Thomas, and Nehemiah. Nowhere do I find mention of William Arms.
Best wishes to you all.
