Currently we have two MP'd Peter Garland profiles with different parents both married to Ann Philip:
Peter Garland of Isle of Wight (# xxxxx4999236 b. Wales)
Peter Garland, of New Kent (# xxx2340000 b. Sussex, England)

It appears their 'About' don't really help for the separation of the families; dates are currently identical, but that is probably the result of mis-merges and 'smerges'.

Much appreciate the catch. If you want to do the footwork and make the changes, I've no objections. Many thanks for reviewing. -Ben.

Dan Cornett & Private User

I've cleaned up, merged, added sources & notes, and am still confused. Please also note the discussion here: http://www.geni.com/discussions/147994 - so we have help on the MA / NH / England side, but really could use some extra eyes here on the Virginia / England side.

There's a tangent on the Isle of Wight family I want to follow up, it leads to possibly a direct line for me (Penny).

Really, really appreciate a review from someone else.

Great job sorting out the wives and locations of these two! The only piece left is to figure out their mothers. Currently Ann Garland is linked as mother of both (and thus to their different fathers)....

That may be the last break as we need input from the descendants on it; I've already set up "my opinion.". :)

Is there a Sussex & a Devon family separately?

... after looking a bit, I 'think' I have the Elizabeths (mothers) dis-entangled. The other item left to sort out are the children of those two families. Currently they have too many with the same dates (probably not that many twins & triplets!) and birth location inconsistencies -- surely the result of preceding mis-merges.

... I took your 'setup', Erica ... subject to DNA confirm/dis-confirming.

Here is one of my puzzlers

From http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=bfulg...

Joan Garland

Nov 10 1665: William Wilson having died intestate, Peter Garland requests administration in the right of Mary, Prudence and Abigail, daughters of his late wife, Joan Garland, the sister of the said William Wilson. Security: John Pitt & Richard Penny. Recorded Jan 19 1666.The will of John Moone dated Aug 12 1655 includes the following:"...To Joan Garland my wife's daughter or her child if living the year after my decease; William Wilson, my wife's son; Peter Garland my wife's son-in-law."

====

The wording reads to me like these 3 daughters of Joan Garland are "not" by Peter Garland, but by a previous husband???

Also that her mother had remarried to a John Moone.

Parsing: first sentence is ambiguous: is Joan Garland the sister of William, or is she the previously deceased wife of William Wlison?

I think it probably is that Joan Garland (Wilson) is the sister; the "late wife" is unnamed in that first sentence -- unless she was also his wife.

The last statement, to me, says that Peter Garland was the husband of the Joan Garland named in that last sentence. John Moone is the husband of an un-named wife (in that sentence); that un-named wife had children William Wilson & Joan Garland (Wilson).

[Using Geni's name convention default for Joan.]

Putting those two together, then, the 'executor'/requestor Peter Garland is the husband of Joan Garland (Wilson) and the brother-in-law of the William Wilson who died intestate. Neither of those TWO Wilsons (William & Joan) are the children of John Moone (of course). The 3 girls named: Mary, Prudence, & Abigail, are the daughters, then, are most likely of Joan Garland (Wilson) but NOT of Peter Garland

If the intestate William Wilson was indeed both brother & ex-husband of Joan Garland, he may have been the father of those 3 girls -- or -- the father of the 3 might be someone else. The 3 would not have been Peter's children, or he wouldn't have to request 'administration' of them.

OK right - the 3 girls could be the children of his late brother in law, William Wilson. That works better than a previous husband for Joan.

You will notice Richard Penny was a surety. He (might) be a 12(th?) great grandfather. So I'm all excited. :)

"To Joan Garland my wife's daughter or her child if living the year after my decease;" (1655)

Makes it sound like Joan (Wilson) Garland was pregnant at the time of her step father's will, with a 1st child. More to suggest Peter Garland took custody of William Wilson's children.

Here's my problem / question about these 3 daughters of Joan (Wilson) Garland. Why aren't they (and / or their issue if deceased) mentioned in Peter Garland's 1694 will?

Maybe they became estranged after adulthood/marriage? Or Peter may have only felt the 'administration' responsibility while they were "children".

6/26/2015 at 9:58 AM

Administration in 1655 is speaking on behalf of his wife; her children would have the claim to her brother's estate, not him. I would think that by his own demise in 1694 these daughters were married off, had their dowers, etc and perhaps were skimpy on children themselves. Curious the grandchildren weren't mentioned but perhaps only that, as they could have been remembered in other ways not in the will abstract. So will go ahead and enter them.

I've done a fair amount of searching around and I hate ALL the options for Jabez Garland's father. :) (will try to present coherent arguments to follow).

So throwing back out there what I had dismissed earlier: Jabez was also known as Jacob and he's (somehow) of the Hampton NH family of Garland's.

This report on that family is nice & clean
