While researching a fourth great-grandfather, I saw a name in the 1820 Hamilton County Census: George Fordigal. Over the years, census takers often mis-heard and misspelled the names of people they are surveying. I submit to my Facebook Friends. Could George have said "Fothergill" and the census take wrote "Fordigal"? What if George was from England and had a pronounced accent? My third great grandfather was William Harvey Fothergill William Harvey Fothergill.

Let's put it like this.

My name is pretty easy but they managed to get it wrong in the 1930 census.

Point taken. It must have been worse in 1820, taking names of people from other countries.
