Does anyone know at what point Michal began being used as a female name vs. a male name? Or has it always been either? It seems like prior to 1940 or so every Michal I have encountered was male but it a lot of females have been named Michal within the last 20 years?

Biblical name. Not the same name as male name.

Acc. to Wikipedia: "Michal" was one of the Biblical names embraced by Zionism, very rarely found in pre-Zionist communities. It is a very common female first name in contemporary Israel.

Polish popular male first name "Michał" is a local form of "Michal".

מיכל not the same as the Hebrew for Michael of course. מיכאל

Ah ha!! Makes sense- clearly just a keyboard issue since most of the profiles/data is in English no accent on the "L" for the males and since not in Hebrew in most Geni profiles (or indices) the distinction is not obvious on casual observation.

Thanks Hatte! Certainly had me scratching my head.

I on the other hand, only know FEMALE Michals, since I lived in Israel for a few years and that's where I know the name from.

I think I have run across male Michals and that it was a mistake LOL.

I seem to have a fair number of males in the currently Ukrainian parts of the former Galicia ;-) and I have come across several in Krakow as well.
