The Steyn family emblem (with the three black birds) that we have been using on Geni thus far is actually the emblem of the Steyn family of the city of Haarlem in the Netherlands. We have been "borrowing" it. They are not at all connected to our progenitor.
This Steyn progenitor, Douwe Gerbrandt Steyn, comes from Friesland, nowadays one of the provinces of the Netherlands. Today I have registered a new Steyn family emblem with the Frisian Heraldic Association known as Fryske Rie Foar Heraldyk. They have approved the emblem which will be published in the 2014 yearbook of said association in November or December of 2014.
I give permission for the use of this emblem to any of the Steyn descendants of Douwe Gerbrandt Steyn. A document with the new emblem and a description of it has been added to this profile. Would appreciate it if you could keep me up to date with how you have used the emblem.
Greetings
Chris Steyn
