There is an old request (in Hebrew) on the web asking for info of the origin of the Citron family. In this message it is noted that the core family from Spain seems to have a history of assume new last names in their wanderings.
".....(translation from Heb.) ….Admoni claims that the Citrons are Levi's. He also writes that the name originates from their trade in Etrogs in Portugal where they went after being expelled from Spain (1492).
Six years later banished from Portugal, the Citrons moved to Genova in Italy, and from there split three-ways:
1. One family group moved to Russia under the name "Levine",
2. Second group went to Kracow and assumed the name "Krakowsky", and 3. Third moved to greater Hungary and kept the name "Citron-Halevi".
After a "root search" trip to the Iberian peninsula (July 2001) they are almost sure that the family lived in a town called Castello de Vide in Portugal. Although it has been a Roman city, it's the sizeable Jewish presence in the Middle Ages that the town is now known for, and there is the remains of one room from the oldest synagogue in Portugal.
(Admoni, "Korot Mishpachat Citron".)
Perhaps we should try to contact the author as he seems to have researched the family extensively, and perhaps he has had DNA testing done.
