Hello All,

I am interested in Whitestaunton Manor, in Chard, County Somerset, England, because this property was given to the Brito (Brett) family after the Battle of Hastings, Hastings, England. The property was in the Brito (Brett) family for several hundred of years, until after the death of Alexander Brett (born abt 1504) in Whitestaunton, England.

The above image of the family crest was found in my great grandfather's brother's possessions after his death, Lemuel G. Brett of Hertford County, North Carolina.

I have gathered Alexander Brett was a (many X) grandson of Sir Ansger Brito. For those that have not found the antiquated family tree of the Brett family, please go to sampfredbrettvillage.com. The small village then renamed the village after this Brito (Brett) family, as this family produced over 20 knights to protect the village and County Somerset, England for several hundred years.

I have found, the following beginning with Alexander Brito (Brett, in descending order):

Alexander Brett, born 1504

Robert Brett, Sr, born 1531

Robert Brett, Jr, born 1551

William Brett, born 1577-1583

Mary Brett (Isham), born 1603 in England, died in Henrico County, Virginia (One of first Brett Immigrants). Mary's daughter, Mary Isham, is believed to be the first known Brett relationship born in Henrico County, Virginia in 1626.

In addition, I have found a relationship, cousins, between Mary Brett (Isham) and William Brett, born 1618 in Hastings, England. This William Brett is believed to be the progenitor of the Brett surname, at least in the northern section of our nation, Massachusetts.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has connected this part of the Brett family to the Whitestaunton Manor, given to the Brito (Brett) family after the Battle of Hastings, in the year of 1066, which was with the Duke of Normandy, then crowned King William I, also known as William the Conqueror.

Hope to hear responses from the public, especially people with the name of Brett! There are fascinating stories I found on the Internet, regarding Whitestaunton and this part of the Brett family.

This village is in County Somerset, England, whose colors match exactly the color of the Brett Family Crest.

@ Mary Brett (Isham), born 1603

You might be interested in the projects that are devoted to families from specific regions in England. Also, it makes sense for more of the Bretts to be made into Master Profiles and researched and "cleaned up," with your assistance.

Carole (Erickson) Pomeroy,Vol. Curator is active in these areas.

http://www.geni.com/projects/Somerset-Family-Heads/13643 You would add to this project the oldest head of household of the Brett family to live in Chard, Somerset and the immigrant to the New World.

Carole (Erickson) Pomeroy,Vol. Curator and June Barnes can say more about the projects devoted to each English county.

Thank you Ms Blejer for your response. As a Vietnam Veteran, coming into direct contact with agent orange in Vietnam, I am not so sure how much help I would be to any project. The effects of agent orange has caught up with me physically, causing other issues as well.

However, I would provide whatever this old brain of mine could give.

Thank's again.

The projects don't need much work luckily. The most important thing is adding profiles for (1) oldest ancestor head of household (2) the first immigrant to the New World.

I know that I want to learn about all the regions that my various ancestors came from and how they lived and what other families they both lived with in England but which came to America with them and intermarried with them both there and here.

I believe that as these projects gradually take off, they will be very exciting to Geni members descended from those who came to America and elsewhere (Australia, NZ, SA, Canada) from England.

i have done something similar for some Eastern European "counties".

Good luck with your health issues!

Ms Blejer,

We share the same goals about family in England and what became the United States. It is with pride that I have learned a lot in the over 25 years of search for family. The excitement really took off, when in 1991, I first learned about my Brett family. Until then, I knew hardly anything about it.

Since the early 1990's, I have been researching over a hand full of my blood lines, at one time, including both my wive's families. With only one exception, all families came from England -- other Scotland.

What a fascinating journey, and past time, the time has been for me, especially learning of several of the areas in England that the Brett family originated after the year 1066 and the Battle of Hastings.

And, like you, I also found the same surnames marrying into the Brett family, both in England as well as the United States.

If I may invite you to see Whitestaunton Manor, Chard, County Somerset, England. The original property (building) was built in the 3d or 4th century by the Romans. After a 10 year renovation project, the "Red Diamond" was completed just months ago. The property originally came into the Brito (Brett) hands, by way of the Duke of Normandy, crowned King William I, AKA, William the Conqueror.

Fascinating family history.

Thank you again for your original message to me. I contacted Carol. And by the way, she is related to me!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was not aware of that.

I will definitely see what I can find on the Internet about the Whitestaunton Manor. I also had ancestors from Chard, by the way.

History is fascinating and when it is anchored in your own personal ancestry or the ancestry of a family member, it's much more vivid.

Thank you Carole, for all the links, and information to come through those links.

Without a doubt I will find the connection I desire, linking the Battle of Hastings, 1066 to the nearest born Brett within my family line.

And, Hatte, thank you for referring me to Carole, lol, one of my second cousins!!!!!!!!!
