I have returned from Prague. While there, I met with Zuzana Bernakova
of Matana, the organization that cares for the Jewish cemeteries. Rabbi
Chaim Koci also attended on behalf of the Prague Jewish community. They
have a database of 20,000 (or 27,000?) graves from the new Jewish
cemetery in Olsany. We could not discuss the databases for the other
Prague cemeteries, since those are controlled by the Jewish Museum of
Prague and Daniel Polakovic did not make it to the meeting.

The bottom line is that Matana would like to set up its own internet
database, similar to the one set up by the Jewish community of Vienna at
http://friedhof.ikg-wien.at/search.asp?lang=en. The data is ready to
go and could be made available quickly. They do not want to share the
data with JewishGen/JOWBR or GenTeam. They are asking for our help to
raise 15,500 Euro ($21,035) to pay for the work. I am not sure if this
is the cost of setting up the new internet site, or if it is an attempt
to recoup the costs of making the database, or both. Also it may be an
attempt to raise funds to allow them to put other cemetery databases
online. Matana is responsible for maintaining over 400 Bohemian and
Moravian cemeteries.

I asked Zuzana to give us her plan for the future, how much would be
required to add data from other cemeteries.

On October 9, the Jewish Community meets to discuss this, so she asked
for a quick answer.

I would welcome a discussion and thoughts from our members. To date, we
have only spent our AustriaCzech SIG funds to help the Czech State
Archives digitize records in its collection which are being made
available on www.badatelna.cz.

Randy , only one man can say something really seriously to this issue .. contact Achab H. ... he knows Prag's backg. very well ...

To Randy: I am not an expert here, but I think the data are already digital. I had been seeking my names in there- via "man at the gate :-)" in New Cemetery and he had been looking into dbase for sure....It shoudl be question of just transfering them into proper format.
I understood that Achab H. and Tom Plesinger are responsible for Mantana project "Keshet" at chewra.com.... So would they add Prague data in there?
To have names in the databese would be really great help, most of the families had someone in Prague... If you're saying that there can be money given for this, I am sure it would be really appreciated and used- no doubt.
Question is really what for they need it...

10/8/2013 at 12:18 PM

to all to understand the problem ... Matana is an organisation taking care after cemteries ... not all
Achab is making volunteer program Keshet from his personal
Matana "do not like him" because he does it for free and maks more than they do ... i know many ocassions they promise to come to cemetery to read some macevas or to take macevas to restore and than more then two years nobody appears ...

Matana is "bussines" project ... for thhis reason they made prupose for some buget.

Of course nobody will do ti for free ... but "jemand" could aks for data
not for making the system ... the system could by arranged by admin of badatelna.eu

just only my view ... somebody can have different view ...

but Randy is the Boss :)

Randy, could you, please, give me a link to the database of graves from the new Jewish cemetery in Olsany? Thanks.

Thank you Petr for your help, but the link you gave me is not the right one. I would need to find the grave of my relations (which really exists - I’ve been there many times before). It would be better to find it in some database instead of going to Prague personally.

just call the cemetery office Mr. Berkovic to get department, row and place
tel. from J.site ..... Tel.vrátnice: 226 235 248
maybe then you could locate it if is missing in the list but it does not mean the record Erich did

Olda, the new cemetery database is what we are trying to get Matana to release to us. But so far the only way to access it is to contact Zuzana Beránková <sbh.sekretariat@matana.cz>.
