Are the Gunther's ethnically German or Polish?

The answer is: German.

Grandma Merrill sang in German. And we have many examples of the written German language in a family bible and in journals that belonged to Grandma Merrill's brother Francis.

There are significant differences between the written and spoken German and Polish.

This means that the name probably originally was spelled Günther, but Günther is usually a given name.

Thank you! We suspect the surname was changed when our grandparents came to the states. The correct spelling was also lost for my husbands Russian-Polish grandfather as well. Makes searching for original documents difficult to say the least.
