It was not uncommon to change the spelling of names or even changing the name completely. The best way I have found to figure out what is what, is to begin with finding birth certificates and documents from earlier in life when there is a better possibility of the original name being there. Then, somewhere along the line as you follow documents about that person through life, you can see if the name was changed, a little or a lot. For example, at birth the child may have the surname of the father, at the time of marriage or military service you might find that the person was given, or took a different name, or changed the spelling somewhat. Later in life as children are born, you may find that the name changes even more, or they may take a name from the place where they live. If you know the parent's names and where they came from, and you follow their history throughout life in documents, you can usually figure out if you are on the right track. Good luck!
