When travelling in Cape Breton in 2000, no one in the Siegel family had any knowledge of an ancestor of Solomon Fine (my great-grandfather) having come to Canada. But while visiting the Glace Bay Cemetery, I came across htis marker while looking for that of my infant uncle which I found later. The inscription, "Our father J. L. Fine" was a mystery to me, since we were also aware of no other Fines in that era. I checked the Hebrew name on the stone "Yakov Lev (or Leib)" and looked to Solomon's stone: "Shlomo bar Yakov Leib", and knew I had a match. I later found an online reference to my grandmother, Dora Siegel, having made a contribution in memory of her grandfather, "Yakov Leib Fine".
Three things flow from this, for the purposes of this record. First, it calls into question the date of death of January 22, 1912, since the stone says February 1912. Second, the year of birth shows as 1845, instead of 1846, and finally, there is the addition of a middle name,
Is there anyone whose Hebrew is better than mine? The stone show the name of his father. and while I can't quite figure out the given name, the surname does not appear to read "Frumson", which is what everyone seems to have thought it to be, although the first syllable does seem to be something like "Frum".
Any takers?
Hello Jack,
First, I suggest you check out http://www.jewishcapebreton.ca/glacebay/cemetery/index.html for other images and cemetery listings which may interest you.
As for the names...my best guess is that the stone reads
" Yackov Leib ???(should have ben or bar, son of...) Eliyahu Friedman Fine".
