Hi all,
I have been placing all images, including vital records, grave photos, and personal photos, in the "Media" section, filling in all the data that I have available. I'm aware that some researchers prefer the "Sources" section for all documents, and suspect that some prefer to reserve the profile picture slot for actual images of the person profiled. Is there a geni protocol to be followed here? My personal database contains source info for everyone, but there are countless - literally - profiles that I've posted since becoming a geni-pro that are not on my database and for whom I have posted nothing in the "Sources" section.
Will appreciate hearing from Curators et al.

I prefer documents as documents which also can be added as cited sources.
You have an option to covert photos in the media section to documents and cite as sources, but not the other way.

Thanks, Bjørn! I'll probably begin converting (the documents!) to sources. What do you think of the practice of using a document, including photos of structures and gravestones, as profile photo?

@Bjørn, how to convert a document posted in "Media" to a "Sources" document?

I use documents as sources and put images in the Media tab, with one of the images chosen as the profile photo explicitly, if there are several.

I love bringing documents in via the sources tab, then clicking on view full page and adding facts to the profile, with the document open so I have a reminder of what the document provides evidence for.

Having sources attached is so helpful when there are merges proposed or done in error.

Judith Berlowitz, click on "Organize this album" when viewing a photo album, and you will get a set of actions for the images you select, where "Make Document" is one of them. (http://www.geni.com/photo/organizer)

I just learned something. Thanks!

Before I do that, @Bjorn, I need to know why Geni is not saving the sources I am adding!

They only appear as sources when you tell what a document is a source for.
If you enter the sources tab on a profile and click add source you can bind a document the person is tagged to as sources to specific values (birth etc) of the profile. The document and cited values will then show up in the sources tab of the profile.

What is really important when tagging sources is to use the Note field to tell exactly (even spelling) what the source tells. By doing that you can easily document differences in sources, spelling of name etc etc, and the differences will show up in the sources tab. Not filling in the Note wield will often be taken as a source of the profile values which may change later on.

Thanks, //www.geni.com/photo/organizer/6000000004058070651?album_id=600000002...: Here is a URL for one of my photo albums. I do not see "Organize this Album" . What do I need to do to reach that area?
Thanks for your patience! I think you exist on a higher plane than mine :>)

I don't have access to view your album, but did you try to go directly to the organizer I linked to above? http://www.geni.com/photo/organizer

You get a column to the left to select which album to organize.

Thank you all; now I'm able to migrate photos among albums, but if I click on "Make Document" the image seems to disappear into a black hole. What is the next step (toward listing as a source)?

Judith - As I understand it, if you "Make Document" from a Photo, then yes, it is removed from your Photo Album. Hopefully it did not totally disappear and if you look in your Documents, you will now find it there.

So decide - want as Photo or want as Document -- or want as both, in which case upload a second time as the one you do not already have it as.

In case you didn't know - Documents is a category under the Research Tab at the top; Photos come under the Family Tab at the top.

"What do you think of the practice of using a document, including photos of structures and gravestones, as profile photo?"

Very common practice.
A personal favorite of mine is this gent: Jacob Jans Moes
I've used his signature as his profile picture, it not only identifies his name, patronym and one variation of the family name but also proves that he was literate :)

You can embed the most important photos, like a signature, in the About Me of a profile.

Only advanced/very experienced users checks the media folder on a profile.

Thanks Bjorn, i'll take that as a compliment ;)

I agree with you, Alex! Any visual reminder is better than the abhorrent vacuum. What all this means is that I will probably continue to do what I've been doing, though I will check to see if Bjørn's suggestion to embed the photos in the "About " section works for me.
Meanwhile, let's encourage all our "advanced/very experienced users" to check the Media tabs!
Proving (flaunting) my literacy ;-}
