Dunia's query to me was -
My father was Aubrey George van Rensburg, born 12 October 1926, ( d 25 July, 2001, Cape Town,) son of George Jacobus Janse van Rensburg born about c 1880, in Vryberg, Northern Cape, d c1945 in Kimberley Northern Cape. My dad was born in Kimberley, Northern Cape.
George married my grandmother about 1925 and she was born in Bloemfontein 1885, Dunia Constance (Connie) Peters
My grandfather fought in the 1918 war in France at the Battle of Delwood where he lost his one arm, so had to return home, where he worked in the diamond mines as a diamond sorter. He had a brother, (never knew his name) who would not go fight so he was in a prison camp. Now - I don't know which one and I don't know his first name. And if he dropped the 'Janse' as well.
When my grandfather married my mother he still used 'Janse' but when my dad was born 'Janse' was dropped.
I suggested -
You do need to know the parents of George to find where he links in. The next step for you is to see his Death Notice but I don't see it listed at http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm300dr?2013080707... -
I think that you could also look at http://www2.lib.uct.ac.za/mss/bccd/ - the information regarding the brother who wouldn't fight being put into prison sounds more like the Boer War than the First world war, so perhaps you need to check on that information - again no George Jacobus - but there is a George Frederick who surrendered.
The other place to look for clues is the excellent van Rensburg website http://www.reocities.com/Athens/Atlantis/4364/
I found nothing at http://www.eggsa.org/cgi-bin/library/searchGraves.pl - the eGGSA Gravestones project.
