In completing the merge in of Ivan van Niekerk's tree, I'm seeing what looks like a merge mash-up in this area. I'm at the coast with quite limited connectivity, so just noting this here in case either Craig Sheldon or Ivan are in a better position to take a closer look.

This is the other profile that appears to me to be a mash-in :-) : Walter 'Boy' David Peter Doubell

Hi Sharon,

Unfortunately it does seem something went wrong somewhere. The lack of Steytlerville records - on-line at least - makes it somewhat difficult to determine where the errors are.

Notice also that Maria Dorothea Smuts has been given Henry and Emily Jones as parents - Maria Dorothea Doubell - which would imply a Maria Smuts and a Maria Jones were inadvertently merged.

Is it possible to roll-back merges or do we have to do this profile-by-profile?

Oh damn, Craig :-( &^*% :-) I suspected as much. There was a lengthy merge-in process of the two trees following an initial merge suggestion that definitely registered as correct on all parameters.
(In fact, 90% of the profiles - except these two - tallied on every detail.)
It may be that they were only 'shell profiles' - so the more merges that were completed using them, the more they accrued information that tallied.

I've just placed a query to the Geni curators who are tech-savvy, about whether there is a quick-fix. Holding thumbs.

There is apparently no quick-fix :-(. Un-merge hasnt happened :-(
So the smerged profiles need to have their correct duplicate re-created. Ivan take a look see what you think needs to be recreated, as this was your tree merged in - so you will lose the info the minute we correct Maria Dorothea and Walter.

Looking at the profiles the problem might not be as bad as originally believed - correct me if I'm wrong, but we were already satisfied that Maryann Smuts van Niekerk (nee Doubell) Maryann 'Girlie' Smuts van Niekerk , Ivan's grandmother, was the daughter of Walter Doubell (1861 - 1950) and his second wife, Charlotte Marliena Smuts.

It seems to me that we need to go back to the closest merge point to Ivan - that is, his grandmother - and gradually work our way backwards, confirming the information in each profile, and that the correct children/parents are attached.

For example, the Walter Doubell profile, with three parents, brother of Maryann - Walter 'Boy' David Peter Doubell - might be a result of a confusion between two sons of Walter, both of whom were also named Walter.

According to the information provided by Henry Heynes Doubell, we already know that Walter (1861 - 1950) and his first wife, Maria Dorothea Smuts, had a son named Walter who died young - Walter David Peter Doubell - 25 June 1883 - 23 June 1884.

It is conceivable then that, if Walter and his second wife, Charlotte, also had a son named Walter that it would be easy to confuse the two. Thus, the Walter with the three parents should, I think, properly be attributed to Walter and Charlotte.

Similarly, the Maria Dorothea Doubell nee Smuts profile - Maria Dorothea Doubell - with the double sets of parents, could well be a result of a confusion between Maria Dorothea and her mother, Mary Ann Smuts nee Jones. So, if we just correct Maria Dorothea's parents to Wessel Smuts and Mary Ann Jones, that should resolve all the problems.

The Henry Jones sr. and Emily Jones sr. profiles that are currently attached to Maria Dorothea's profiles were added by Ivan and are not the main profiles for Henry and Emily. So, once Maria Dorothea's parentage has been corrected, we could merge Ivan's profiles with the main two, or simply delete them.

Unless I'm missing something? There doesn't seem to be problem with dates or other profiles.
