That applies to all self-governing royal cities. They held the Jewish competitors rid of (the Jewish town of Prague was in specific sense also self-governing, but with the help of Maria Theresia, the expulsion of the Jews was also tried). But since the freedom of establishment of the Jews, the Jewish community in Pilsen was one of the biggest in Bohemia.
Thanks for this idea, Dan. I'm inclined to agree with Hanuš/Hans Petr/Peter Grab in understanding the town name in the broader sense to include surrounding towns, and in fact data from these towns are included in Badatelna.cz's records under the rubric (for example) of Plzeñ, probably because the record-keeping was done there. Even so, I've been adding to town projects only those people who were born in the town proper.
Do we have clear criteria for adding profiles to town projects? Do we need to be clearer?

Judith: I am not sure if I have pointed this way already (and you almost certainly know all about this source anyway) but please note that there are family names (at various times) in the Pilsen chapter in Gold's book - translation is available within the Yizkor Books Project - books in translation - Czech Republic - Gold book on Bohemia. Ditto other communities, of course. I also agree that clear criteria might be helpful.
My criteria has been to add only people actually born in the town to the project and not those born in nearby areas. Record keeping may be specific to a town as you point out.
If there are requests from users to include other regions into a specific town project rather create a new project for that district. That is the way I have been working with all the Holocaust and other projects such as http://www.geni.com/projects/Jewish-Families-of-Krak%C3%B3w-Poland/....
This same issue came up regarding Mittelsinn, Bavaria, and whether to include smaller surrounding villages with small Jewish communities that were intimately connected to Mittelsinn.
In this case it was decided to "list" and include all the small Jewish communities up to a 30 mile radius. However, once any specific area grows too large it will broken off as an independent project of its own.
The initial title "Mittelsinn Project" was revised and expanded to address the addition of Burgsinn and the Würzburg-Region vicinity.
