Don't know if this is of any help to anybody but I thought I'd post it any ways.
Nathan Stark, of Guilford, Vermont and Some of His Descendants," by Ralph M. Stoughton, Gill, Mass. 1950 ===
Nathan (4) [Daniel (3) William (2) Aaron (1)] (The son of Daniel and Sarah (Culver) Stark) was born in Groton, Conn. about the year 1743, as his reputed age was 87 years when he died in 1830 in Guilford, Vermont. He was a shoemaker by trade, so must have served an apprenticeship to some cordwainer in Groton or vicinity, quite possible in Lebanon, since he m. about 1764 a wife whose family name was Morgan, and by family tradition known to have been an intimate girlhood friend of Ruth Davis of Lebanon, wife of Reuben Shattuck. Nathan Stark's first wife Olive (Morgan) must have been a member of the Moses Morgan line of Lebanon, but to which particular branch of this family is unknown to the writer.
In the late summer of 1781 Nathan Stark with his wife and eight children removed to Guilford, VT. The long journey on horseback overtaxed the wife's strength and she died soon after arrival in Guilford. Before her death, she had her son Jedediah take the six months old infant Eunice, to the Shattucks who raised her as Eunice Shattuck. Nathan Stark first settled in the Baker-Davis section of Guilford near the Layden town line, and his first wife was prob. in the old cemetery with graves marked generally with field stones, across the road from the cemetery now in use. Nathan (4) Stark remarried in Guilford in 1782, his second wife Esther (Gallup) (daughter of Joseph and Jerima Gallup) who had come to Guilford form Scituate, RI After his second m., Nathan bought land adjoining that of his father-in-law in the S. W. corner of Guilford on the Halifax town line. Nathan and Esther (Gallup) Stark are bur. in the Collins Cemetery not far from the Gallup farm location. Beside them lie Daniel and Esther (Harkins) Stark, the four graves with only field stone markers. Nathan (4) Stark never received a pension for Revolutionary Service so evidently did not serve, or service was not sufficient to qualify for a pension. In the "Aaron Stark Family" he has been confused with Nathan Stark* of Williamsburg, Mass., a pensioner with a long record of service.
Hey, cousin,
Thanks for posting this. I've long had reservations about "The Aaron Stark Family" and its accuracy, so it's good to see a more modern researcher questioning it. I just wish Stoughton had been more specific here about the exact points of confusion!
I'll have to see if I can track down anything about the potential Moses Morgan connection. I'll also see if I can locate an affordable copy of Stoughton's book.
