I just starting researching my Canadian side of the family....My question is...How would a name be entered into Geni ,when it appears different in every Canadian source Record.
He appeared on the census in 1861 in Shefford. Joseph Myott age 40

Hi Ronda, and welcome to Geni!

You'll get a slightly different answer from everyone you ask.

Geni doesn't yet have a sophisticated way to handle name variants, but you can get around it.

Here's what I do -- Use a "standardized spelling" in the name fields, then put ALL of the variants in the AKA field. Geni searches on the AKA field, so people should still be able to find your profiles. Even so, I take some care in choosing the standardized spelling. In most cases it will be very obvious, but sometimes not. If I have any doubt I use a spelling that most people will recognize.

For example, I have an ancestor who spelled his name Howry, Howrey and Howery. My immediate ancestors used the spelling Howery, but most of his descendants use Howry, so I went with that because I want more people to see his name and recognize it.
